Hello. I’m Kim Hangyeol of Smileview Dental Clinic, which I have been operating for many years as a cosmetic dental clinic for front teeth near Sinnonhyeon Station.

“I had a consultation about veneers, but I haven’t been able to decide for several days because I was told that once the teeth are reduced, the process cannot be reversed.”

I hear this question very often in the treatment room.

After 16 years of seeing patients, I have developed my own standards for distinguishing what is a common course after tooth reduction for veneers and what should be checked as a warning sign.

If you are reading this, you may also have paused at the final stage, wondering, “What if my teeth become sensitive after they are reduced?” or “What if the veneers come off a few years later?”

To put it simply, this is determined less by what you do after reduction and more by how accurately things were assessed beforehand.

If you spend just three minutes reading this, you should be able to take away at least one standard for distinguishing the signals your body sends after tooth reduction.

Why are the first few days after tooth reduction for veneers so sensitive?

Some patients call in alarmed the day after their teeth have been trimmed and temporary restorations attached, after being startled by a sip of cold water.

The same thing happened to an office worker in her 30s last week.

In my view, this is less likely to be an abnormal sign and more likely to be a period when teeth with a thinner outer layer respond sensitively to temperature.

It may feel even more noticeable if the temporary restorations have not yet sealed completely.

However, if the sensitivity does not subside after several days or changes into a sharp, pinpoint pain when biting, the situation is different.

Problems such as pre-existing cavities or gum disease may sometimes become apparent later, so it is best not to endure the symptoms and to have them checked promptly.

Why does the amount of tooth reduction vary between consultations?

“I had consultations at three clinics, and they all recommended reducing different amounts.” I hear this quite often as well.

The treatment plan changes when factors such as how far the teeth project forward, the gum line, the balance with the neighboring teeth, and the desired brightness of the color are different.

To cover dark teeth with a lighter color, the porcelain veneer needs to be thicker, which means sufficient space must be created for it.

That is why I tell patients to focus less on the amount itself and more on whether the clinic explains why that particular amount was recommended.

If the only answer you receive is, “We need to reduce this much,” without an explanation, you may ask one more time.

What should you look for to reduce problems such as sensitivity and veneers coming off?

This is why minimally reduced or non-preparation approaches—where the teeth are trimmed only slightly or not at all—are discussed.

The remaining outer layer is understood to provide greater resistance to sensitivity when it is thicker.

When you have a consultation, it can help with your decision to choose a clinic that first shows you the expected result using an intraoral scanner (a device that scans the inside of the mouth in 3D) and DSD (a design process that previews the finished appearance), and that allows you to try the shape with temporary restorations for several days.

Even so, veneers are a treatment that may cause sensitivity, veneers coming off, gum irritation, staining, or fractures depending on the individual.

These possibilities may increase if you have severe teeth grinding or clenching, proceed while covering cavities or gum disease, or try to conceal a malocclusion (a condition in which the upper and lower teeth do not come together properly) that requires tooth extraction with veneers.

If a wall has a crack and you simply put up new wallpaper, the crack will eventually reappear through the wallpaper.

That is what happens when the order of treatment is reversed.

What criteria should you use when choosing a veneer clinic?

• Whether they first show you how much tooth reduction is needed through scans and simulations

• Whether they consider a minimally reduced approach with you

• Whether they give you time to preview the fit with temporary restorations

• Whether follow-up care continues after the veneers are attached.

These four points will generally give you a sense of the right direction.

Being diagnosed directly by a dentist with sufficient clinical experience can also help you achieve the result you want.

Honestly, this is something I think about constantly as well. I believe it is right to tell patients when something does not need to be done, but I also understand how long they may have spent worrying in front of the mirror.

Veneers are not a procedure focused on filing down teeth; they are a treatment that begins with an accurate diagnosis.

Once a tooth has been reduced, it cannot be restored to its original state, and durability should come before simply looking attractive.

When you think of the teeth as belonging to your own family, the answer generally points in a similar direction.
