What are dental veneers? The meaning, and the 3 precautions more important than the procedure (advantages and disadvantages)
Hello. I am Dr. Kim Hangyeol, director of Smileview Dental Clinic.
Many people look into what dental veneers are in hopes of achieving a neat, bright smile.
Many people feel less confident because of the shape or color of their front teeth, or want a quick improvement before an important event.
However, veneers are not simply a “technique” for making teeth whiter and more even.
I believe they are closer to a “comprehensive art” that helps bring out each patient’s natural beauty.
That is why I consider the following three principles most important in my practice.
-
I design the most natural-looking smile for each person’s face.
-
Rather than recommending veneers alone, I diagnose each case from an integrated perspective.
-
I understand and empathize with the feelings of patients who are afraid of dental treatment better than anyone.
Today, I would like to honestly share a professional perspective that people considering veneers should know before treatment.
“Won’t I look beautiful as long as my veneers are made unconditionally white and even?”
Many people think this way, but successful veneers begin with deeper consideration.

Part 1. Veneers are not “dental cosmetic surgery”; they are “smile design.”
When asked what dental veneers are, most people answer, “A procedure in which the tooth surface is lightly shaped and ceramic shells are attached.”
That is not incorrect.
However, this describes only the process; it is not the essence of the treatment.
The meaning of veneers, as I understand it, is “the process of finding a smile that harmonizes best with an individual’s face.”
Everyone has different facial shapes, lip shapes, and proportions of gums and teeth visible when smiling.
If these factors are ignored and the teeth are simply made white and square like those in a celebrity photograph, the result can only look awkward and artificial.

Before creating veneers, I look at the patient’s entire face.
I comprehensively analyze how much the corners of the mouth rise when smiling, the shape of the lip line, the overall facial proportions, and whether the size of the teeth is harmonious, then design a “smile made just for you.”
This is the first step toward achieving a satisfying result.

Part 2. Veneers may not be the right answer.
“Doctor, should I get veneers?”
This is the question I hear most often from people who visit because of concerns about their front teeth.
However, I do not recommend veneers to everyone.
That is because I am a specialist in integrated dentistry who covers various areas, including orthodontics, cavity treatment, and the jaw joint.

When the teeth are severely misaligned, the amount of tooth structure that must be removed for veneers may become excessive.
In such cases, arranging the teeth first through orthodontic treatment is much more beneficial in the long term.
Sometimes, concerns can be improved with simple resin treatment or teeth whitening alone.
After considering the patient’s oral condition, bite, and harmony with the face, I make a comprehensive determination as to whether orthodontic treatment is more appropriate, whether cavity treatment should come first, or whether minimally invasive veneers are possible.
Only after fully explaining the approach that is most beneficial for the patient and deciding on the treatment direction together do we proceed with the actual veneer treatment process.

Part 3. Advantages and disadvantages of veneers: remember this one thing.
Every treatment has advantages and disadvantages.
It is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of veneers accurately and be familiar with the precautions.
- Advantage: The shape and color of the teeth can be dramatically improved in a short period.
They are resistant to discoloration and staining, which can help maintain a bright smile for a long time.
- Disadvantage and precaution: The most important point is “tooth reduction.”
Once tooth structure has been removed, it cannot be restored, so the key to treatment is how conservatively and healthily the teeth are reduced.

I personally experienced various dental treatments from childhood, including cavities, root canal treatment, and a fractured front tooth.
That is why I understand better than anyone the fear and tension people feel when sitting in a dental chair.
For this reason, I adhere even more firmly to the principle of “minimal reduction,” preserving as much of the natural teeth as possible.
Reducing unnecessary removal and carefully shaping only the areas that truly need it.
I always keep in mind that this is the most important precaution for protecting the patient’s dental health and increasing long-term satisfaction, and I practice accordingly.

I, Dr. Kim Hangyeol, help each person find their own complete, authentic smile.
So far, I have explained what dental veneers are based on my treatment philosophy.
I believe this process goes beyond simply making teeth look attractive; it is a process of helping each patient regain confidence, and I always approach it with a strong sense of responsibility.

Could it be because this sincerity comes through?
I feel deeply rewarded as a dentist when I meet patients who regularly fly in from Jeju Island for orthodontic treatment or visit with confidence through an introduction from actor Donghyunbae.
A beautiful smile begins with healthy teeth.
I hope you carefully consult with and choose a clinic that considers your precious teeth and the harmony of your entire face.
