I hear concerns like this very often in the consultation room.

When comparing teeth whitening prices—from one-day whitening to at-home whitening—what criteria are you using?

Teeth whitening is not simply a procedure for making your teeth look brighter. It is a diagnostic process to find the method that suits the current condition of your teeth.

For satisfactory whitening, it is important to check whether the clinic keeps the following three points in mind.

• Does it first identify the cause of discoloration and determine whether whitening is appropriate?

• Does it take an integrated look at cavities and gum health instead of recommending whitening alone?

• Does it transparently explain what is included in the price, expected individual differences, and the possibility of side effects?

I have followed these three principles throughout my 16 years as a dentist and 8 years running Smile View Dental Clinic.

Today, I will gather and answer, one by one, the questions most often asked by people looking into teeth whitening prices.

Q1. Is it okay to compare prices alone? Isn’t all whitening essentially the same?

A. No.

Even when the same term, “whitening,” is used, the actual treatment can differ significantly depending on whether the price includes a preliminary examination or only the application of whitening gel.

Tooth discoloration can result not only from external staining caused by coffee or curry, but also from internal causes such as discoloration after root canal treatment or aging.

If whitening is performed without identifying the cause, the teeth may become unevenly lighter or the results may not meet expectations. That is why it is important to first check whether the diagnostic process is included in the price.

Before whitening, we first assess the cause of discoloration and the condition of the teeth, then explain whether whitening is appropriate or whether another treatment is needed.

Q2. Can I start with the least expensive clinic and move elsewhere if necessary?

A. You can, but it may ultimately cost you more time and money.

Whitening performed without a proper diagnosis may have a short-lasting effect and lead to repeat treatment. When the initial and repeat treatment costs are added together, the total burden may actually be greater.

The length of time whitening results last is also known to vary from person to person depending on habits related to consuming staining substances and oral care.

This is why how long the results last, rather than the immediate price, should be the practical basis for comparison.

Q3. I’m concerned about tooth sensitivity. Is it related to the price?

A. It can be.

Sensitivity may occur depending on the individual when the whitening agent irritates the dentin. If the condition of the enamel—the hard layer covering the tooth surface—or the presence of cavities is not checked in advance, the sensitivity may feel more severe.

Rather than applying whitening in a uniform way, it is important to check whether the process includes adjusting the concentration of the whitening agent and the treatment time according to the condition of the teeth.

I first examine the condition of the teeth, adjust the concentration and treatment time accordingly, and also explain how to care for the teeth after the procedure.

Q4. Why do one-day whitening and at-home whitening differ in price?

A. Because the treatment methods themselves are different.

One-day whitening is performed in a dental clinic in a single visit, while at-home whitening is carried out at home over a certain period using a custom-fitted device.

Since material costs and the time required differ depending on the method, the cost structure can naturally vary as well.

Rather than declaring one method better than the other, the priority is to choose the approach that suits your dental condition and lifestyle.

Q5. I have existing crowns or fillings. Will they affect the price?

A. They may.

Restorations such as fillings and crowns do not whiten in the same way as natural teeth, so the possibility of a color difference between them and the surrounding teeth must be considered in advance.

If this is not checked beforehand, satisfaction may actually decrease after whitening. It is therefore an important point that must be addressed during the consultation.

I check whether you have existing restorations, explain the expected color difference and limitations in advance, and help you decide whether to proceed.
