How painful is Thermage?

This is one of the most common questions from people considering Thermage.

"How painful is Thermage?"

To put it simply, Thermage does involve pain, but it is within a tolerable range. In particular, the latest version, Thermage FLX, has improved tips and a better cooling system, so the pain is much less than in previous versions.

If you set pain at 5 out of 10 for Thermage, the approximate experience for each procedure would be like this:

Ultherapy: 6–7 points (definitely more painful than Thermage)

Potenza: 5–6 points (similar to Thermage, or slightly more painful depending on the area)

Oligio: 2–3 points (much less painful than Thermage)

Compared like this, Thermage is less painful than Ultherapy and a little more stimulating than Oligio. Thermage mainly delivers radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis, stimulating collagen and tightening the tissue.

During this process, you feel a brief sting and a heavy, pulling sensation from the heat. It doesn’t feel like the surface is hot; many people describe it more as a tight feeling from deep inside.

But what about people with a low pain threshold?

There is one important point here. People with a low pain threshold, meaning those who are sensitive to pain, may find Thermage quite difficult to tolerate.

If a patient struggles a lot during the procedure, honestly, it can be exhausting for the medical team as well. It is not as easy as it sounds to continue the procedure while watching a patient in pain. Above all, I also have a relatively low pain threshold myself, so I can imagine how difficult it must be.

The importance of anesthesia options for Gangnam Thermage Dermatology

Of course, lowering the energy level during the procedure can reduce pain. But if the energy is lowered, the effectiveness of the treatment will also decrease.

As more radiofrequency energy from Thermage accumulates in the dermis, collagen production is activated and the tightening effect becomes greater, so enough energy needs to be delivered.
