What is a deep bite?
It refers to a condition where the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth excessively when the mouth is at rest.
It is called a “deep bite.”

Causes of deep bite
The biggest cause of deep bite is considered to be genetic factors.
It can also develop later in life due to habits such as having multiple molars extracted at once or teeth grinding.
Disadvantages and discomfort of deep bite
- Aesthetic concerns
When deep bite is present, the lower teeth are not easily visible from the outside.
In many cases, it is accompanied by protruding teeth, which can become a cosmetic concern.
In severe cases of deep bite, the face may appear shorter and look like a square jaw.

- Functional concerns
When deep bite is present, chewing is generally less comfortable than with normal occlusion.
It may worsen upper front-tooth protrusion, cause wrinkles around the mouth, and lead to various gum problems.
If left untreated, it can go beyond tooth damage and may also cause temporomandibular joint disorders.
Difficulty level of deep bite orthodontic treatment: Difficult
Common protruding teeth and crowded teeth can be corrected by moving teeth forward and backward,
spacing between teeth can be corrected by moving teeth left and right,
and irregular alignment can be corrected through left-right and forward-backward movement of the teeth.

However, deep bite requires not only left-right and forward-backward movement of the teeth,
but also vertical adjustment of the position of the teeth or gums,
so treatment is more difficult and requires a careful treatment plan.

Treatment plan for deep bite and overretained teeth orthodontics
- Diagnosis of problems and symptoms
① Deep bite

This is a deep bite in which the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth significantly.
In particular, on the left side of the screen, the front teeth are covered so much that they are barely visible.
② Irregular teeth alignment

From the left and right sides, and from the upper and lower views, the teeth are aligned very irregularly.
③ Overretained teeth

Overretained teeth occur frequently in about 2& of the total population on average,
and the likelihood of occurrence is known to be about three times higher in men than in women.
When overretained teeth are present, the alignment becomes more distorted and the malocclusion worsens.
④ Protruding mouth

Rather than the teeth themselves being protrusive,
the gums in the upper jaw appear more protrusive than those in the lower jaw.
- Treatment plan
- Since there is sufficient space in the jawbone,
treatment will proceed as non-extraction orthodontics, extracting only the overretained teeth and not the other teeth.
-
The deep bite will be improved using a special device called ABP.
-
The protruding upper gums will be improved using mini screws.
-
The expected treatment period is about 18–20 months.
(* The treatment plan above is part of the specialist’s diagnosis based on analysis of the patient’s teeth and gum condition.)
- Treatment results
After 21 months of orthodontic treatment, the treatment was completed and the braces were removed.
