Hello^^
This is Director Kim Hyun-soon of Ceramic Dental Clinic,
a specialized orthodontic clinic near Hakdong Station in Gangnam.
Today, I’d like to talk about the “black triangle,”
a term often mentioned after orthodontic treatment.
When gaps form between teeth during orthodontic treatment,
people often ask,
“Is this a side effect of orthodontics?”
“Can it be removed?”
In this post, I’ll explain step by step
from the causes of black triangles
to prevention and treatment methods.
What Is a Black Triangle?

A “black triangle” is a term used when
the gum tissue does not sufficiently fill
the space between teeth,
making the area look like a “black triangle.”
It especially occurs after orthodontic treatment,
when overlapping teeth become straightened.
Because teeth are not rectangular in shape,
the gum tissue that surrounded them does not immediately fill in
as the teeth move.
Of course, in most cases it gradually decreases over time,
but if the teeth were very crooked,
the black triangle may be noticeably visible
right after orthodontic treatment.
How Can It Be Prevented?

Black triangles appear more easily when there is gum recession
or weakened periodontal health.
Therefore, to avoid this,
it is important to take good care of your gums regularly.
<Proper Gum Care Methods>

Treatment Methods for Black Triangles
If the black triangle is noticeable
and causes cosmetic discomfort,
you may consider the following treatment methods.

▶ Slightly reshape the sides of the teeth
and bring the teeth into closer contact
This method involves very lightly shaping the sides of the teeth
by a very thin amount (0.3–0.4 mm)
to bring the teeth closer together.
The amount removed is very small, and in most cases it can be done without discomfort.
▶ Fill the space with resin
Another option is to fill the black gap between the teeth with resin.
This can improve aesthetics with a natural shape and color.
[Note!]
Tooth reduction must be approached carefully.
Tooth reduction should only be chosen after充分 consultation with a specialist,
and only when it is truly necessary.
If done too aggressively,
it can place stress on the teeth and gums.
Because this is not a treatment that applies to everyone,
it is important to receive an accurate diagnosis of your individual tooth condition
and choose a customized treatment!
Do you feel like your questions have been answered a little?
Black triangles are not something to fear,
but prevention and aftercare are very important.
