Hello, this is Ceramic Dental Clinic.
Today, I’d like to talk about protruding mouth orthodontic treatment.
"My mouth looks prominent, so I always cover it with my hand when taking photos."
"Can orthodontic treatment really make a protruding mouth less prominent?"
This is one of the most common concerns among patients who visit an orthodontic clinic.
After all, many people come to an orthodontic clinic because they are especially concerned about their side profile.

What exactly does a protruding mouth mean?
A protruding mouth is a condition in which the mouth and the area around it appear to stick out toward the front.
-
In some cases, the teeth themselves are tilted forward.
-
In other cases, the jawbone may be protruded overall.
Even if the teeth are aligned, the mouth may still appear prominent because of their angle or position.
So a protruding mouth cannot simply be explained as “the teeth are crooked.”
It needs to be evaluated comprehensively, including bone position, tooth angle, and even lip thickness.

Protruding mouth orthodontic treatment: how does it make the mouth move back?
This is the part most people are curious about.
The principle itself is really simple.
Move the teeth that are positioned forward backward.
That’s all there is to it.
However, moving the teeth backward requires space.
So depending on the case, tooth extraction may be necessary.
Once space is created, the teeth can gradually move backward into that space, making the mouth appear less prominent.
Of course, not everyone needs extraction.
In some cases, a small amount of space can be created between the teeth, or the issue can be resolved using the space left after wisdom teeth are removed.
This is something that can only be determined through a detailed examination.

"Does extraction orthodontics make the face look sunken?"
"I heard that if you pull teeth, the cheeks can get hollow..."
This question comes up almost every time during consultations. ^^
It’s something that can be true, but also not true.
When the face looks sunken
This can happen if the teeth are moved back too much beyond what is necessary.
This is a problem that occurs when the initial diagnosis is incorrect.
When the face does not look sunken
If the teeth are moved by the appropriate amount after an accurate analysis, the side profile can actually look more natural.
That is why a detailed pre-treatment analysis is so important.
This includes side-profile X-rays, 3D scans, and facial proportion measurements.

What treatment methods are available?
Here is a summary of the main methods used for protruding mouth correction.
| Category | Features | Suitable for |
|---|
| Metal braces | The most traditional; precise force control | When you want the best results within a set budget |
| Ceramic braces | Tooth-colored appliances, less noticeable | When you want both aesthetics and effectiveness |
| Clear aligners | Appliances are almost invisible | Mild protrusion |
| Lingual braces | Appliances attached to the inner side of the teeth | When you do not want them visible from the outside |
There is no method that is simply good or bad.
The best option is the one that matches your degree of protrusion and skeletal condition.
That said, I’d like to say this carefully.
If the protrusion is fairly severe, you should be a little cautious about places that say it can be solved with clear aligners alone.

Protruding mouth orthodontic treatment can help greatly for people like this
-
People whose mouth appears to stick out in side profile
-
People who feel tension in their chin when closing their mouth
-
People whose gums show a lot when smiling and whose mouth also appears prominent
-
People whose lips go far beyond a line drawn from the tip of the nose to the tip of the chin
On the other hand, in these cases, another treatment may be needed first.
-
If the gum condition is poor → gum treatment first
-
If there are multiple cavities → start orthodontic treatment after treating the cavities
-
If the bone itself is severely protruded → consider surgical orthodontic treatment
At Ceramic Dental Clinic, orthodontic consultations are based on side-profile X-ray analysis and 3D oral scanning.
We consider not only straightening the teeth, but also the overall balance of the face.
I believe our role is to help prevent any "I regret it after orthodontic treatment" situation.
What I learned while studying at Seoul National University and training in orthodontics at the University of Tokyo is that, in the end, an accurate diagnosis determines the result.
After seeing patients for more than 10 years, that conviction has only become stronger.

Let me be honest about the treatment period and management
Protruding mouth orthodontic treatment usually takes about 1 year and 6 months to 2 years and 6 months.
It depends on the degree of protrusion and whether extraction is needed.
Management is also important.
Here are some things that are good to follow during treatment.
-
Avoid hard foods as much as possible (the appliances may come off)
-
Brush more thoroughly than usual (food tends to get stuck around the appliances)
-
Be sure to keep regular visits (about once a month)
After the treatment is finished, you must wear a retainer for a certain period.
It’s like putting up a fence around a newly laid lawn.
It protects it until the roots settle in. ^^

The longer you hesitate, the bigger your worries tend to become
In fact, rather than saying, “You should do protruding mouth orthodontic treatment quickly,”
I think it is much more important to make the decision after understanding it accurately.
I can’t say my opinion is always right.
But I hope this article can at least serve as a reference for your decision.
If you come in for a consultation, it would be helpful to prepare the following.
-
Front and side photos (with the mouth closed and smiling)
-
Notes about the areas you are especially concerned about
-
Your past dental treatment history (extractions, prosthetics, etc.)
Please feel free to ask any questions at any time.
I’m sure this will be useful. ^^
