5 Criteria to Check Before Choosing a Gangnam Orthodontic Clinic: From Orthodontic Specialists to Collaborative Care Systems

When you search for “Gangnam orthodontic clinic,” hundreds of options appear. Their websites look similar, and all of the advertising copy sounds convincing.

Even after spending hours searching, the question “So where should I go?” often remains unanswered.

Why having so many clinics can make choosing even harder

There are a great many dental clinics providing orthodontic treatment in the Gangnam area. On top of that, the information visible from the outside is often very similar, which makes choosing even more difficult.

With overlapping interior photos, equipment introductions, and phrases such as “orthodontic specialist,” it is only natural that clinics are difficult to distinguish when comparing advertisements alone. Medical advertising is subject to its own regulations, so the wording may also look similar. However, wording that complies with regulations does not guarantee the details of the treatment provided.

The first thing to look at, before advertising copy, is publicly verifiable qualifications.

Criterion ① “Orthodontic specialist” and “orthodontic specialist dentist” are different terms

“Orthodontic specialist” written on a sign or in an advertisement and a dental orthodontics specialist recognized by law are different concepts. These two terms are also often mixed together in advertisements for Gangnam orthodontic clinics.

Under the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s “Regulations on the Training and Recognition of Qualifications for Dental Specialists,” a dental orthodontics specialist must complete one year of internship training and three years of residency training—a total of four years—at a designated training institution, and pass the specialist qualification examination. Because these training requirements may change when the regulations are revised, if you want to know the current standard, it is more accurate to check the latest effective date of the original regulations as well.

Criterion ② How specifically does the clinic explain the diagnosis and treatment plan?

An orthodontic diagnosis begins with gathering information. A treatment plan is developed by combining an oral examination, photographs of the face and mouth, panoramic and cephalometric X-rays, and an analysis of dental models.

The reason the same explanation can leave different impressions is whether it is supported by evidence. There is a difference in weight between simply saying, “Your front teeth protrude a little, so let’s extract them,” and explaining, while displaying photographs and X-ray images, exactly how much the front teeth protrude.

You can ask questions such as these during the consultation:

• How long is the expected treatment period, and what is the basis for that estimate?

• If tooth extraction is necessary, why is it needed?

• Compared with other options, why do you recommend this method?

If the answers are vague, that is a point where you may want to ask again. Pay attention to whether the explanation leads back to the supporting records and materials when you ask follow-up questions.

Criterion ③ Can issues beyond orthodontic treatment be managed in one place?

During orthodontic treatment, more than just tooth alignment is happening in the mouth.

According to guidance from the Korean Association of Orthodontists, when food remains around orthodontic appliances, plaque can form easily, and plaque can cause cavities, periodontal disease, and bad breath. Cavities are the issue that can become particularly troublesome. Tooth tissue that has been drilled away cannot be restored, and treatment is completed by adding a restorative material, so the area may need to be treated again as time passes. This can also delay the orthodontic schedule.

For this reason, it is generally preferable to address cavities or gum problems before beginning orthodontic treatment. Conversely, when teeth overlap, areas that a toothbrush cannot reach remain inaccessible. Once the teeth are aligned, more surfaces can be cleaned with the same brushing technique, so orthodontic treatment can help reduce the need for tooth-reducing procedures later on.

The length of time appliances remain in place varies considerably depending on the type of malocclusion and the treatment method. In any case, the period is not short, and other dental care may be needed during that time. It is worth asking during the consultation how cavities or gum problems are handled if they develop during orthodontic treatment, and whether there is a system in which several dentists work together. If care can continue in one place, the orthodontic plan is less likely to be interrupted midway.

Criterion ④ Does the clinic discuss care after the appliances are removed?

Orthodontic treatment does not end on the day the appliances are removed.

Guidance from the Korean Association of Orthodontists explains that after appliances are removed, the teeth tend to move back toward their original positions, a tendency known as relapse, and that it is especially noticeable in the early period. The same guidance recommends wearing retainers for at least one to two years, and longer if possible. This is similar to supporting a newly transplanted tree with stakes for a period of time.

For this reason, it is useful to listen for whether the consultation includes discussion of what happens after the appliances are removed. Clinics can differ in how often they check the teeth while retainers are being used and whether the dentist who began the treatment continues to oversee care throughout that period. If the conversation only covers attaching the appliances and does not include a plan for after their removal, you may want to ask about that first.

Criterion ⑤ Is the clinic located somewhere you can visit for several years?

The last point is the most practical one.

Because orthodontic appliances need to be adjusted according to the rate at which the teeth move, visits are often scheduled at four- to six-week intervals. This interval may vary depending on the type of appliance and the stage of treatment, so follow the guidance of your treating provider.

If the appliances are worn for a year and a half, there will be roughly fifteen visits. The number of visits increases further when the retention period is included.

Even if you like a clinic, a two-hour round trip can make it easy to postpone visits. If the intervals become irregular, the progress of tooth movement may also slow. The route between home and work and the distance from the station may seem minor, but they are conditions that can affect whether you are able to continue treatment through to the end.
