Hello.😃
I am Dr. Park Yeol, a board-certified orthodontist,
and I have been providing orthodontic treatment at Gangnam Station for 20 years.
Wearing elastics during orthodontic treatment?
Why you should not take it lightly
I’ll explain.
Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment
often hear this around the middle or later stage of treatment.

That is,
“Starting today, you need to wear elastics.”
When people first hear that they need to wear orthodontic elastics,
they are often a little surprised or think,
“Wear elastics..? What is that?”

Today,
I’d like to explain why orthodontic elastics are important,
and especially why you must remember the exact position
where the elastics are worn.
The A to Z of wearing orthodontic elastics
Wear them for more than 20 hours a day.

Orthodontic elastics are a tool that guides teeth in the correct direction
with the right amount of force, not a strong force.
Orthodontic elastics are not a tool that moves teeth all at once
by applying a “strong” force.
Rather, they play a role in guiding and adjusting the position and direction of teeth
through a light but continuous force.
When you wear orthodontic elastics,
teeth gradually tip in that direction
and move very slightly along the orthodontic wire.
At this point, what matters is not wearing elastics that apply a strong force,
but how long you wear elastics with an appropriate force
throughout the day,
and whether you wear them in the correct position and in the correct way.
In most cases, orthodontic elastics need to be worn for at least 20 hours a day
for the effect to appear properly.
If you wear them for less than 10 hours,
the effect is not even about half,
but often remains very minimal or may not move at all.

Take a photo of the initial elastic position
and keep it as a record!

If you wear orthodontic elastics differently from the instructed position,
the direction of tooth movement can go off track,
causing the teeth to move to a different position
and possibly creating problems.
Therefore,
the position of the elastics is truly important.
That is because the direction in which teeth move changes completely
depending on where the elastics are connected.
Teeth may move in the wrong direction,
and the treatment plan can be thrown off.
How can you
remember the elastic position well?
1️⃣ Take a photo the first time you wear them.
2️⃣ Practice a few times while looking in the mirror.
3️⃣ If you are wearing them at home and cannot remember the exact position,
be sure to contact the clinic again.

How long do you wear them?
The duration of elastic wear depends on
the patient’s orthodontic treatment plan
and current condition.
Some people need to wear them for as short as 2–3 months,
while others need to wear them for 5–6 months or longer.
If you wear them diligently,
treatment time may be shortened,
but if you do not wear them as instructed,
the schedule may be extended by several months or more.
If you are careless about wearing elastics,
it not only prolongs the treatment period
but also has a significantly negative impact
on the final quality of the orthodontic result.

Even though elastics may seem like something you simply “put on,”
in fact they play a very important role in orthodontic treatment,
so you should think of them as an important part of the orthodontic process.
When wearing elastics,
4 things you must remember
Checklist 📌
Wearing position, daily wearing time, daily wear
- Take a photo of the wearing position 📸

When the clinic first tells you where to place the elastics,
be sure to take a photo.
If you cannot remember the position, contact the clinic!
If you put them on as you please,
orthodontic treatment will progress in the wrong direction.😥
Be sure to confirm by phone or by visiting the clinic.
- Wear them for at least 20 hours a day ⏰

As a rule, you should wear them at all times except when eating or brushing your teeth.
- Replace them once a day 🔁

Replace them when you wake up in the morning
or at a set time during the day.
Because elastics lose their elasticity over time,
we recommend replacing them once a day at a set time.
(Changing them too often is not recommended)
- Wear them consistently without missing days 📆

If you skip even one day,
orthodontic progress will be delayed.
Consistency is the key.
🔍 Common problems that can occur
when they are worn incorrectly

- Wearing them on the left and right in reverse
Teeth may move asymmetrically,
and the bite and midline may become misaligned.
- Hooking them only on the upper teeth and leaving out the lower teeth
No orthodontic force is transmitted between the upper and lower teeth,
so there is no effect at all.
- Wearing them in the wrong position and then leaving them unattended for months without visiting the clinic
Teeth may move in the wrong direction,
and the entire orthodontic plan may be thrown off
(possible serious problems)
- Not keeping to the wearing time
The orthodontic effect becomes very slow,
and the treatment period gets longer.
You may end up having to keep wearing elastics indefinitely.
- Repeatedly putting them on and taking them off
Teeth move unevenly,
resulting in an unstable bite.

We fully understand how uncomfortable and difficult it can be for patients
to wear elastics during orthodontic treatment.😢
However, for a well-finished orthodontic result,
wearing elastics is ⭐essential⭐!
