Introducing Various Real Cases of Dental Midline Correction

When we see patients who visit us for orthodontic treatment,

some are seeking only to improve the alignment of their teeth,

but most come with multiple concerns.

Before introducing the various cases of patients seeking dental midline correction,

today we will first explain why the midline needs to be aligned.

Is the dental midline corrected for aesthetic reasons?

Orthodontic treatment is sometimes performed for aesthetic reasons,

but improvement is also recommended for functional reasons,

such as when the bite does not align

or when leaving facial asymmetry untreated may have negative effects.

Why does dental midline asymmetry occur?

There are also various possible causes for this.

When supernumerary teeth or missing teeth are present,

the dental alignment can shift, resulting in asymmetry.

It can also occur when the dental arch is too small,

leaving insufficient space for the teeth to emerge and causing crowding.

01. Dental midline correction due to a crooked tooth

In many cases, crooked teeth cause the dental alignment to shift.

In particular, when a crooked tooth appears on only one side,

the dental midline can become misaligned.

The details can be determined through an in-person consultation,

but orthodontic treatment should proceed after checking

whether there is sufficient space for alignment

and whether tooth extraction is necessary.

02. Midline asymmetry caused by large spaces between the teeth

This is the opposite of the crooked-tooth case:

it is a case in which dental midline correction is needed because the spaces are large.

The spaces between the teeth may be large because

the teeth are small

or because the dental arch is large compared with the teeth.

Spaces may also occur when teeth are missing.

In such cases, orthodontic treatment can be performed to close the spaces

and align the midline.

03. Dental midline correction needed due to malocclusion

There are several types of malocclusion.

From left to right in the image above,

they are open bite, deep bite, and crossbite.

If the bite is the issue, we actively recommend orthodontic treatment,

and an arch expansion appliance may be used if necessary.

04. Cases requiring improvement of dental alignment or asymmetry

When asymmetry occurs because the dental alignment has shifted,

it can be improved through orthodontic treatment.

In cases of facial asymmetry,

the method of improvement differs depending on whether the cause is skeletal

or related to the teeth,

so a thorough examination is necessary.

If the issue is related to the temporomandibular joint or the teeth,

it can be relatively easily improved through orthodontic treatment.
