| When Is Implant Reoperation Necessary? |

Hello, this is Lee Hyun-seob, CEO Head Doctor of Seoul Centum Dental Clinic.
As more and more people are looking into implants these days,
consultations about reoperation have naturally increased as well.
There are various cases, such as
inflammation occurring,
or the implant breaking.
Since you may be wondering whether reoperation is needed in all such cases
or whether it is unnecessary,
I’ll explain that topic today.

- Causes of implant reoperation
Broadly speaking, there can be three reasons.
- Placement failure
- Poor oral care
- Bad habits such as bruxism
The surgery may have been too aggressive from the start,
or the fixation may have been insufficient.
Or inflammation around the implant may have developed
because oral care was neglected.
Habits such as grinding your teeth or clenching them tightly
can also be causes of reoperation.
So if you know the causes of reoperation in advance
and avoid those factors,
you can use the implant for a longer time, right?

- How to prevent peri-implantitis
To use a placed implant for a long time,
the thing you must be most careful about
is peri-implantitis.
So I’ll briefly explain how to prevent it.
Regular checkups,
which cannot be emphasized enough,
and brushing after meals are truly important.
Also, if possible, it is better to avoid alcohol, smoking,
and tough, hard foods.
Reduce habits that are bad for your teeth,
and think of it as ongoing care through scaling
and proper brushing.

- Implant reoperation process
If the existing implant has broken,
or if peri-implantitis has developed,
you do not immediately proceed to reoperation.
First, finding the cause of failure is important!
After identifying why the inflammation occurred
and why the fixation weakened,
a treatment plan must be made.
Then the existing implant is removed
and reoperation is performed.

- How can you use implants for a long time?
As explained above,
reducing habits that are bad for your teeth
and managing your oral health with checkups and scaling
is very important!
More specifically,
I recommend getting scaling
and an oral examination at least once a year.
Rather than hard and chewy foods in everyday life,
soft foods are better, and when chewing,
please use both your natural teeth and implant teeth evenly!
You should also brush well,
and using dental floss and interdental brushes additionally
will be a big help with care.
Please make sure the implant is properly placed
and pay attention to maintenance as well!
Implant care is less about needing a lot of money or time
and more about building it into a consistent daily habit,
so please remember the points explained today well
and apply them in your everyday life.
Also, if you are wondering, “Is implant reoperation necessary?”
I recommend visiting a dental clinic first
and getting a diagnosis.
Thank you for reading this long post today.
I’ll introduce more useful information next time as well,
so please leave any questions in the comments^^
