| If You’re Concerned About a Tooth Crack, Check This |

Hello, this is Seoul Centum Dental Clinic.
One day, you look in the mirror and suddenly notice a crack,
so it’s only natural to keep worrying about it!
But the problem is deciding whether it’s okay to just leave it alone
or whether you should go to the dentist right away.
Today, I’ll explain what’s good to check in advance,
including whether treatment is necessary and, if so, what to do.

- Causes of a tooth crack
The cause is actually easier to explain than you might think.
It may be easier to understand if you think of fingernails, which split more often.
They can happen easily when there is external impact or a lack of nutrition!
They also occur frequently when there are bad habits that keep irritating the tooth.
Therefore, to prevent cracks, it is best to check in advance for behaviors that put strain on your teeth
and avoid them.

- What happens if a tooth crack is left untreated?
A tooth crack never heals on its own.
In other words, if symptoms worsen, treatment is absolutely necessary.
This is one way it differs from fingernails.
Fingernails are okay because they grow back,
but after permanent teeth have erupted,
they do not grow back, so caution is needed.
Therefore, if the crack is very small and thin,
you may manage it well by correcting bad oral habits,
but fundamentally, it is better to receive treatment.
At this point, do not decide on treatment by yourself;
please make that decision after an examination at the dental clinic.

- Treatment methods for a tooth crack
① If the crack is only on the crown of the tooth
Fortunately, this is not a severe stage,
so it can be treated with a simple procedure.
Of course, depending on the size and depth,
it may be treated with resin, an inlay, and so on,
but it is still relatively simple.
As with cavities,
this is why early detection and treatment are important.

② If the nerve tissue is damaged
Just seeing the word nerve can feel a little scary, right?
As you may have expected,
in this case, root canal treatment is needed.
After that, a crown prosthesis should be placed
to prevent further cracking.
If the crack has been left untreated,
it would have created an environment where cavities can easily develop,
and inflammation would also have been more likely.
Therefore, it is best to get a thorough examination
and proceed with treatment.

③ If the root is damaged
It may have started as a tooth crack, but if left untreated for a long time,
a case like this, where the root is damaged, can occur.
In such cases, there may also be pus,
or the jawbone may have been resorbed.
In most cases, the tooth is extracted,
and an implant or partial denture is then used.
In the case of front teeth, it is easier to notice,
so treatment is often relatively simple,
but if it is in the back like a molar, it is harder to detect,
which makes it a somewhat unfortunate case.
That is why regular oral examinations are never overemphasized.
When the crack is still small,
do not leave it alone—get it checked.
Today, I explained the causes of cracks
and the treatment methods,
so was it easy to understand?
To summarize, in the case of a tooth crack,
prevention is possible,
but once it occurs, you should definitely get an examination
and discuss treatment options.
Then I will introduce useful dental information again
in my next post.
Thank you.
