Hello,
This is Dangsan Station Dental Clinic.
Like what you may have seen in a laboratory during science lab class in school,

Have you ever seen a doctor looking into the mouth through a microscope when you went in for dental care?
This is used in fields of treatment that require a high level of precision, such as conservative treatment or surgery.
- However, please note that not all medical institutions have one.
Today, let’s look together at why this instrument needs to be used.
What is a micromicroscope?

This is equipment that can greatly magnify even very small areas of the teeth and gums,
with up to 25x high magnification, helping to identify areas that cannot be observed with the naked eye.
To address pain whose cause cannot be identified, it helps find small cracks or root canals (nerve canals),
making it possible to make an accurate diagnosis and provide precise treatment.
Then, to explain in what situations it can be used, I will divide it into three main cases at Dangsan Station Dental Clinic.
- When finding hidden root canals

The pulp inside a tooth has a complex structure,
and because each tooth has different shapes and structures, there are many abnormal canals as well.
A micromicroscope is used during the process of finding and cleaning root canals with such complex structures or those that branch into multiple directions.
It is difficult to find a narrow root canal opening with the naked eye, but in a magnified view it becomes clearly distinguishable.
In addition, it makes it possible to precisely remove inflammatory tissue at the root tip (apex) or during surgery.
- When the extent of decay is deep

C-shaped root canal
If the boundary area around an inlay or crown is involved,
or if the extent of decay is deep and difficult to check,
it can be identified through magnification.
- When checking for fractures (cracks)

If you feel a sudden, sharp pain as if electricity runs through your tooth while eating,
Dangsan Station Dental Clinic says that a crack should be suspected.
Even if an X-ray is taken to find the location of a crack,
fine cracks are difficult to observe.
In such cases, using a microscope can help locate the cracked area.
How does it help the patient?
1️⃣ Reduced pain
Because a precise field of view can be secured,
unnecessary tissue damage is reduced,
which can lower not only pain but also the patient’s burden.
2️⃣ Higher treatment success rate
By identifying small problems that can be missed with the naked eye in advance,
the likelihood of retreatment can be greatly reduced.

In particular, even in cases where complex root canals make high-difficulty nerve treatment likely,
the success rate increases.
3️⃣ Shorter treatment period
With accurate diagnosis and surgery, the overall treatment period
is often shortened.
When treatment is completed accurately in one session,
the number of return visits also decreases,
and Dangsan Station Dental Clinic believes this can reduce the patient’s burden.
4️⃣ Infection prevention
Because it allows careful identification of areas of infection that are easy to miss with the eye,
the likelihood of reinfection can be lowered.
In the past, we had to rely on small mirrors and lights,
but a micromicroscope provides a clear field of view.

It can also significantly reduce mistakes,
and if a camera is additionally installed,
the surgical process can be recorded,
so it can be used when explaining things to patients
or for training medical staff.
Although it has many advantages like this,
the cost of introducing and maintaining it is somewhat high,
so not all medical institutions have one.
In addition, medical staff need separate education and training
to learn how to use it.
However, because it allows for more accurate diagnosis
and can reduce pain and discomfort,
Dangsan Station Dental Clinic believes that, from the patient’s perspective, it has only positive points.
Of course, it is not absolutely necessary for all treatments,
but in cases that require a precise process,
it can truly be a very useful tool.
As mentioned earlier, not all medical institutions
have this equipment,
so it is also a good idea to check in advance before visiting.

Please remember that consistent oral care
and regular checkups are necessary
to protect oral health,
and I will be back next time with a more interesting
and informative post.
This has been Dangsan Station Dental Clinic.
Thank you for reading this long post~
