Just by taking a photo,
your front teeth look short?
Gangnam Dental Clinic
That’s an optical illusion! Haha

“Doctor, my front teeth are short. Whenever I take a photo, one side always looks shorter.” The patient said this and was worried.
But when we actually made the diagnosis... my first thought was, “Oh, thank goodness!” The teeth were perfectly fine😊

It wasn’t that the teeth were short; it was an “optical illusion.”
Not short, but a ‘receded illusion’

When we took detailed images, the problem was not the length of the teeth but the angle.

In the process of reshaping a tooth that had been injured before, the front surface had been pushed slightly backward.

When the angle changes like this, the position where light reflects changes, so the tooth can look short or sunken.
Just like how a single beam of lighting can change the impression of a face.
So I told the patient, “This isn’t a case of lengthening the tooth. It’s a situation where we need to correct the way light reflects.”

After additional examinations, we found that an inlay placed on the molar side had fallen out, and both wisdom teeth were severely decayed.
We decided to help with these areas step by step as well, and first focused on improving the front teeth!
The beauty of adding, not trimming

The patient was firm. “Last time, at another clinic, they ground down the broken part. This time, please don’t shave my tooth—just treat it.”

All right, let’s not shave it—let’s add to it! The method I chose was a resin veneer.
└ Simply put, it’s like applying a thin layer of light film over the tooth. But this is not just filling something in; it’s a delicate sculptural art that imitates the color and texture inside the tooth.
The color of a tooth is not just one shade. The inside is opaque and becomes more transparent toward the tip, so to reproduce this properly, the colors have to be layered.

So today, too, we combined three shades of resin with our fingertips. Palette work in dentistry—it’s the world of art haha
“Light does not lie.”

The treatment was carried out in a thorough ‘zero-defect mode.’

We placed a rubber dam (moisture barrier) around the tooth to prevent even a single drop of moisture from getting in, filled the tiny gaps with bonding agent, then cured it with light and adjusted the reflection angle.
When we showed the mirror to the patient, they were surprised. “Did you make the tooth longer?” No, the length stayed the same.
It was only made so that the light would reflect in the right direction.

When the light changes, the impression changes. Just like how a selfie succeeds with the right lighting.
“Every time I take a photo, I start by smiling.”

I still remember how the patient couldn’t take their eyes off the mirror after the final polishing was done haha

“Doctor, it really doesn’t show at all.”

At that moment, I burst into laughter too. As the resin veneer made the surface shine, the tooth that had been set back for so long received the light properly and returned to its place.
That small change even transformed the expression.
Naturally, yet perfectly
Gangnam Dental Clinic
At Gangnam Dental Clinic, we always think like this: teeth are not simply areas to be “fixed,” but instruments that need tuning.

If you shave too much, the sound changes; if you don’t touch them enough, disharmony appears.
Finding a natural balance in between is the real skill. This treatment was not just about fixing the tooth, but about detailed design that handled light and angle.

“An experience where one front tooth changes the impression”
That smile from the patient, who went home after feeling that, was the best reward for me as well.
This was Director Sohyunsoo, who loves front tooth treatment. Thank you.
