Doctor, I think a cavity has formed next to my front tooth.

When I got orthodontic treatment, they shaved my teeth a little,

and since then, I haven't liked the shape either.

This patient came to us after being personally recommended by the director of a dental clinic near Seolleung Station.

Because the patient came by referral, it was a challenging case. We had to pay attention to both cavities and aestheticsㅎㅎ

I’ll explain one by one what concerns the patient had and how we addressed them. Please read to the end!

Interproximal reduction

As soon as I looked into the mouth, I could quickly identify the cause.

There were very subtle angular marks between the teeth, the result of IPR (Interproximal Reduction), which is performed during orthodontic treatment.

Many people think orthodontics means “teeth are not shaved at all,” but when there isn’t enough space and teeth have become crowded and uneven, sometimes a very thin amount of shaping between the teeth is necessary to align them.

This is not a bad thing. It is one of the treatment methods commonly used in orthodontics. However, if it is not properly finished afterward, the rough surface can become a structure where bacteria easily stick.

That was exactly the case with this patient’s teeth.

The IPR area had been finished with angular edges, so food frequently got stuck there, and bacteria entered through the gap and caused decay.

Also, the shape was not aesthetically pleasing, which was another source of dissatisfaction.

You can’t just treat the cavity alone.

Usually, for a cavity between teeth, you might think, “Can’t we just fill that part?” But this case was different.

I explained it to the patient like this: “This is not just a cavity; it’s the result of the tooth’s shape. If we don’t correct the shape together, there is a high chance the cavity will come back.”

So we set three goals.

1️⃣ Carefully remove the decay
2️⃣ Restore the angular, uneven shape naturally with resin
3️⃣ Consider light reflection and color changes for an aesthetic result

Treatment is not just a “repair”; it is a “redesign.” Restoring both function and beauty is exactly what an integrated dental medicine approach is about.

A Battle of 0.1 mm: The Art of Resin

While carefully removing the decay, we preserved the surrounding healthy tooth structure.

And after isolating the area to prevent damage to adjacent teeth, we used a bonding process so the tooth and resin would adhere completely.

Next came the layering of color. To make it look truly natural, both the translucent enamel and the opaque dentin beneath it had to be recreated.

So I built up multiple layers of resin in different shades, restoring the tooth’s angle of reflection and curves as they were.

Each time I added a layer, I checked the color again under natural light. Sometimes I even think, “Am I making an artwork?”..^^;

The dark-looking cavity disappeared, and the angular edge became smooth.

It was completed so naturally that it doesn’t stand out even under natural light.

It looks so seamless!!

Hearing that made me smile before I knew it. Every time I see a patient’s smile, I feel alive and experience an indescribably high sense of accomplishmentㅎㅎ

“Saving a tooth” means giving a person’s life back

I always think this way.

The goal is not simply to treat the cavity, but to correct the reason it formed in the first place—that is the real treatment.

At Seocho-gu Dental Clinic, we do not see even a small cavity as just a cavity. We analyze the habits, structure, and shape hidden behind it and work so that “the same thing will not happen again.”

So my goal is also to make it so that, as much as possible, patients do not need to come back after treatment.^^

If someone sees this goal of mine, they might say I’m not very good at running a business.

But even if I am treating just one person, I want to pour myself completely into that time and do everything I can for them.
