When You May Regret Getting Same-Day Veneers and How to Resolve It

isn't that what makes them same-day veneers?

Many people think this way.

However, surprisingly many people regret the decision afterward when they received the treatment without fully understanding it.

Not long ago, someone who had received same-day veneers elsewhere came to us after regretting the procedure and asked us to remove them all.

(As we have a water laser, we can remove them while minimizing the amount of tooth reduction.

For your reference, even when veneers are removed because you are dissatisfied with them, some amount of tooth reduction may occur.

That is why it is best to choose a clinic with equipment and expertise in removal.)

Today, I will explain the differences between same-day veneers and conventional veneers, situations in which people regret getting same-day veneers,

and how to receive treatment while preventing regret.

There are two ways to make veneers.

• Milling them from a ceramic block using a machine

• Applying and firing them layer by layer with a brush, repeating the process (like firing pottery)

The first method can be used to make “same-day veneers.”

This is because a pre-made ceramic block is milled on the spot using equipment in the clinic.

The equipment shown in the photo above is used to make same-day veneers.

Since there is no need to take an impression, send it to a dental laboratory, and wait for it to be completed, the veneers can be made and attached on the same day.

In contrast, with the second method, a dental technician applies the color one layer at a time by hand and repeatedly fires it in a kiln.

This work takes place over several days at a dental laboratory rather than in the clinic, so it cannot be completed in one day.

A dental technician repeatedly applies and fires each layer with a brush. It is difficult to make them in just one day.

So, apart from speed, how do the results differ?

The key factors are color and translucency.

Ceramic blocks milled by machine are basically masses with a single uniform color.

These ceramic blocks are milled to make veneers.

As a result, they can be produced quickly and uniformly, but there are some limitations when it comes to expressing the subtle color variations and translucency characteristic of natural teeth.

Actual front teeth have a natural gradient, with a deeper color near the gums that becomes more translucent toward the edge.

The method of building up each layer by hand is advantageous for reproducing this layered coloration and depth through which light passes.

However, this does not mean that the machine-milling method is always bad.

The result can vary considerably depending on the type of block, the equipment, and the practitioner’s skill.

In our case, even when milling with a machine, we further shape the veneers by hand to make them thinner

and better preserve the tooth’s original texture.

This takes more hands-on work and time than simply milling them “only” by machine and attaching them immediately,

but we adhere to this approach because it allows us to make veneers that are much more natural-looking and thinner.

In summary, same-day veneers are fast and convenient, but there may be differences in the subtlety of their appearance,

while conventional veneers take longer but have strengths in terms of natural appearance.

Rather than one option being unconditionally correct, the issue is which one suits your situation.

2. Situations in which you may regret getting same-day veneers

So, in what situations might you regret the decision?

The most common situation is when you considered a natural appearance the most important factor but proceeded based only on speed without knowing about the difference.

The front teeth are the most visible part of the face, so if their color looks flat or simply too white, they can instead appear artificial.

This difference is even more noticeable when several teeth are treated at once.

The person I mentioned earlier who came to have all of their veneers removed after receiving them elsewhere was in a similar situation.

Although finishing quickly was convenient, the result did not have the natural appearance they had expected when they looked in the mirror.

Also, when every step is forced into a single day,

there may not be enough time to adequately attend to details such as color matching, bonding, and bite adjustment.

When these issues accumulate, they can eventually contribute to discoloration or detachment.

Ultimately, when the decision is based on only one criterion, such as price or speed, many people are left feeling dissatisfied afterward.

3. How to receive treatment while preventing regret (solutions)

The most important thing is to understand the differences between the two methods accurately before making a decision.

First, consider whether you are in a situation where speed is urgent or whether a natural appearance is your top priority.

During the consultation, you should also determine whether the clinic explains these differences honestly and recommends the method that is more suitable for your situation.

If a clinic only says that it can always finish quickly with same-day veneers, it is a good idea to think twice.

During the procedure, the key is whether sufficient time is allocated.

Before the final bonding, I personally try matching two or three bonding-agent colors, and I also try to adjust the bite carefully.

These details are ultimately possible only when enough treatment time is devoted to each person.

If the procedure is scheduled too tightly, it may be carried out under pressure, making it easy to miss the most important finishing steps.

Therefore, it is also a good idea to get an idea during the consultation of how much time will be allocated for the procedure.

Finally, it is also important to consider what happens if you are dissatisfied with the result.

As mentioned earlier, some amount of tooth reduction may occur even when veneers are removed.

Because we use a water laser to remove them while minimizing the amount of tooth reduction,

many people also visit us for retreatment.

The case shown in the photo above involved someone who visited us for retreatment after a veneer had broken. Since the teeth had already been reduced, the veneers had to be removed as carefully as possible.

Even so, I hope you will set the right course and discuss everything thoroughly from the beginning,

so that you can receive the treatment just once rather than having to undergo it twice.
