Hello. I am Jae-hyung Park, director of Wonjin Dental Clinic, where I have been practicing in Gangnam since 2012.
I had my wisdom tooth removed.
When can I eat?

The recovery process after treatment is often more painful than the extraction itself.
The dull, heavy feeling and throbbing pain that appear after the anesthesia wears off,
along with swelling, can make it uncomfortable to eat or carry on with daily activities as usual.
Careless actions during this time can irritate the extraction site and delay recovery.
On the other hand, if you know what to watch out for and take proper care of the area, you can return to your daily routine more quickly.
So today, I will provide a comprehensive overview of the precautions to follow after wisdom tooth extraction.

Why it is important to follow the precautions after wisdom tooth extraction
When a wisdom tooth is removed, an empty space is left behind, and blood collects there before soon clotting.
This is called a blood clot.
The blood clot that forms serves to protect the area from outside exposure until the gum tissue settles into place again.

However, various forms of irritation can prevent the blood clot from settling properly or cause it to come loose.
When this happens, recovery may be delayed, and the exposed jawbone can lead to a condition called dry socket, which may cause severe pain.
The reason you need to follow these precautions is to prevent such problems.
Careless actions can cause dry socket, so please read the information below carefully to the end.
Eating after wisdom tooth extraction: When and what can you eat?
One of the things people are most curious about is probably eating.
In general, it is best to have your first meal after the anesthesia has worn off.
While the anesthesia is still active, your sensation is reduced, so you may bite your lips or the inside of your cheek,
and you may not notice that food is hot, putting you at risk of burns.

- Recommended foods: porridge, steamed eggs, tofu, soup
For your first meal, it is best to eat soft foods that will not irritate the extraction site.
Conversely, it is best to avoid hard or chewy foods, spicy foods, and foods that are very hot or cold.
Also, using a straw can dislodge the blood clot because of the pressure created when you suck, so you should use a cup for about a week.
Brushing after wisdom tooth extraction: Is it okay to brush on the day of extraction?
“Won’t brushing make things worse?”
Some of you may be worried about this.
To get straight to the point, you can brush your teeth even on the day of extraction.
However, for three days starting on the day of extraction, brush only the other teeth while avoiding the extraction site.
Avoid brushing forcefully into every corner as you normally would or rinsing your mouth vigorously.

These actions, like using a straw, can affect the blood clot as it settles into place.
For two to three days after extraction, focus less on cleaning excessively and instead care for the area without irritating the wound.
Exercising after wisdom tooth extraction: Why is it restricted, and when can you resume?
For people who exercise regularly, there may be few things more difficult than being told not to exercise.
I am sorry to say this, but it is best to take a break from exercise for about two to three days.
Exercise can raise your heart rate and blood pressure,
which may cause bleeding to recur at the extraction site or make swelling worse.

High-intensity exercises such as weight training and running
- Exercises that are allowed
Light exercise such as stretching and walking
A complete summary of precautions after wisdom tooth extraction
Let me summarize once again the points that many people may easily overlook after extraction. Please be sure to remember them!

- Bite down on the gauze for the full time you were instructed to
The reason for biting on the gauze is to stop the bleeding and help a blood clot form.
- Do not use a straw or rinse vigorously
Actions that increase pressure inside the mouth can irritate the extraction site.
- Be careful with hot and irritating foods
Hot or spicy foods can cause discomfort at the wound site.
- Take a short break from strenuous exercise
Activities that raise your heart rate and blood pressure can increase bleeding or swelling.

- Avoid alcohol and smoking
Alcohol and smoking are particularly harmful to recovery. You must refrain from them for one week.
- Take prescribed medication as instructed
Even if your symptoms improve, take the antibiotics for the full prescribed period. Pain medication can be taken according to the severity of your pain.
Taking the first painkiller in advance, before the anesthesia wears off, can help with pain control.
- Follow your scheduled appointments
If your medical team has given you a follow-up schedule, it is best to visit according to that schedule.

When you should visit the hospital immediately
Pain and swelling may continue for about two to three days after wisdom tooth extraction.
However, if your symptoms become worse instead of improving over time, there may be a problem.
You should continue to monitor yourself for the following symptoms.
-
Pain that suddenly becomes severe
-
Bleeding that continues
-
Swelling that does not subside
-
Fever or chills
-
Difficulty opening your mouth or swallowing
In particular, if you have a fever along with severe pain, it may be a sign of infection, so you should visit the hospital immediately.

Today, I provided a complete overview of the precautions to follow after wisdom tooth extraction.
Even everyday actions such as eating, brushing your teeth, and exercising require extra care immediately after an extraction.
The first few days may be somewhat inconvenient, but please remember that those few days can affect your recovery.
Thank you. This has been Jae-hyung Park.
