No-Prep Laminate vs. Invisalign Express

Recently, a woman from Argentina requested a consultation about smile design, saying she wanted to refine the shape of her teeth when smiling.

She had a beautiful smile arc, with the curve formed by connecting the lower edges of the upper front teeth when smiling naturally following the line of her lower lip. She said she was satisfied with her smile and did not want major changes, but because the two front teeth were slightly different in size and somewhat misaligned, she wanted to make them look more even. She said she had started orthodontic treatment when she was younger but stopped midway, and because of her job, which involves a lot of video filming, she did not want treatment that would take a long time or be very noticeable.

Among the two upper front teeth, the left front tooth was slightly larger than the right, and this was what she was most dissatisfied with. There was also slight misalignment in the upper and lower front teeth. Because of previous mandibular extraction orthodontic treatment, the lower first premolar had been extracted, and there was a small residual space on the right side. In addition, due to deep overbite, the lower front teeth were almost invisible. An implant had been placed in the left first molar, and the second molar was missing.

To improve all of these issues, full retreatment would have been necessary. However, because the patient wanted minimal treatment in a short time due to the nature of her job, we explained two options: laminate treatment to improve only the alignment of the upper front teeth, which was the area she most wanted to correct, and treatment with Invisalign.

Laminate vs. Invisalign Express

To improve tooth size and shape, we recommended minimal-preparation (no-prep) laminates and Invisalign Express, which can be completed within 2 to 3 months. The patient chose Invisalign Express, which could treat her teeth in a short period of time without significantly altering them.

Because she had previously stopped orthodontic treatment as a child after finding it difficult, she likely would not have chosen a treatment that took a long time. But if a relatively short period of 2 to 3 months made it possible to improve tooth alignment with a device that would not be noticeable, she wanted to proceed with Invisalign. She originally came in considering laminate treatment, but during the initial consultation, she did feel some hesitation about laminate treatment even with no-prep or minimal-prep options. However, she said she was very glad to learn on this occasion that it was possible to simply and quickly correct only the areas she wanted within a short time.
