An orthodontic story of a U.S. military patient who completed treatment in a short period

The patient who received treatment this time was a U.S. military patient in her early 20s. She was scheduled to transfer to another country for work in six months, and wanted to complete as much treatment as possible in Korea before leaving.

Her dental condition was as follows:

There were spaces between the upper and lower front teeth. There was also crowding, with the front teeth being crooked.

The upper and lower teeth were biting too deeply, resulting in deep overbite. The lower left premolar was rotated 90 degrees, which affected the alignment and bite on the left side.

In fact, within six months, there wasn’t enough time to perfectly align even the rotated molar.

However, the patient was most concerned about the spaces between the front teeth, so for this treatment, our goals were to improve the spaces between teeth, tooth alignment, and the overbite.

Treatment process and results

A total of 19 aligners were used to correct the gaps between the front teeth and crowding, and the lower teeth were completed in just 12 stages.

During the remaining 7 stages, we wanted to align the rotated premolar at least a little more, but due to time constraints, each aligner had to be worn for only 5 days, so it was difficult to expect enough tooth movement. So we decided to exclude it from the treatment goals.

Two months after starting orthodontic treatment, when the photo was taken while wearing the 8th aligner, the tooth alignment had improved a lot, and the spaces were almost closed.

After the final completion of treatment, the upper and lower teeth were much more evenly aligned, and the deep overbite was significantly improved.

Since the left premolar had been excluded from the treatment goals, the bite was still not perfectly matched, but we provided the treatment records and planned for the remaining treatment to continue after returning to her home country.

One more thing: The upper right front tooth already had slight gum recession. So we informed her in advance that the gum height on the left and right sides could look different after orthodontic treatment. We also recommended that matching the gum height later with gingivoplasty would make it look even better.

In this way, she completed orthodontic treatment with only five clinic visits over about four months.

Lastly, after wearing fixed retainers on the upper and lower front teeth and a Vivera retainer, she left the country.
