Hello.
We are Lee Won-shin and Choi Won-woo, dermatology specialists with 22 years of experience.
"Did you drink?"
"Why do you look so tired?"
If you are troubled by facial redness, these are words you may have heard at least once.
In fact, among the patients who come in for treatment because of facial redness, many say that being misunderstood like this is harder than the discomfort of the skin itself.
Especially in seasons like now, when cold winds blow and the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors becomes large, redness symptoms tend to get worse.
Today, I’ll explain in detail the causes of facial redness and treatment methods.

Why facial redness patients increase in winter
Every year from November to February, the number of people visiting for facial redness increases noticeably.
Even people who already had redness often did not feel much discomfort during the summer.
But as the weather gets cooler, especially when they come in from cold winds into a warm indoor space and their face suddenly flushes, they begin to feel the need for treatment.
In the end, dry environments and sudden temperature changes are the main factors that worsen redness symptoms.
2. Two causes of facial redness
The causes of redness can largely be divided into two categories.
The first is chronic inflammation of the skin.
If symptoms such as facial redness or breakouts continue for more than three months, they may remain as redness.
The second is dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.
There is a nervous system that regulates the dilation and contraction of the blood vessels in our face.
If something goes wrong with this system, facial flushing can occur when emotions change or when you eat hot and spicy foods.
In fact, even healthy people can turn red when temperature changes are severe or when emotions shift.
However, people with redness stay red for 30 minutes, and in some cases up to two hours, after they flush, which is what makes it uncomfortable.
As a result, since both causes are ultimately phenomena in which capillaries on the skin surface become dilated,
the key to treating redness well is to reduce or control those dilated blood vessels.
3. Why laser is the answer for redness treatment
For redness treatment, topical or oral medications are sometimes used.
However, oral medications act not only on the face but throughout the body, so some people feel uncomfortable taking them.
Topical medications are effective, but when their effect wears off, symptoms can rebound and become much worse.
That is why we mainly use Synergy vascular laser, a treatment that can be used safely and locally and acts on blood vessels.

Whether the cause of redness is inflammation or autonomic nervous system dysfunction, the end point is still capillary dilation and redness.
Physical treatment that destroys enlarged capillaries to reduce them or constrict them, in other words laser treatment, becomes the most effective method.
The number of treatment sessions varies depending on severity, but it is usually done continuously for about 3 to 5 sessions.
If you receive treatment once every 2 to 3 weeks, you can expect stable results.
In practice, when treating with Synergy laser, 7 to 8 out of 10 people show a response, and after 3 to 4 treatment sessions, you can confirm that redness has decreased by about 60 to 70% compared to the beginning.
4. At-home care for facial redness
It is actually difficult to reduce dilated blood vessels with home care alone.
However, correcting lifestyle habits to prevent symptoms from worsening is certainly helpful.
You do not need to think too hard about it; simply avoid environments that can make your face turn red as much as possible.
For example, it is good to reduce exposure to hot environments such as saunas and jjimjilbangs, and to avoid foods that are too stimulating or too hot.
5. What if you have stubborn redness that does not improve even with treatment?
"I’ve tried redness treatment everywhere, but it doesn’t seem to work."
For people like this, we recommend a microbiome test.
Through a skin microbiome test, we can identify the cause of chronic inflammation.
Finding the cause and trying treatment in a way that addresses that cause can be helpful for stubborn redness that does not easily improve.

In closing,
Redness is more than just skin turning red; it is also a concern that can lead to misunderstandings in social life.
In fact, many people come in for treatment because they do not want to hear, "Did you drink?"
Fortunately, improvement is possible safely and effectively through Synergy vascular laser,
so if you are struggling with redness, I recommend that you do not endure it for too long and instead come in for a consultation.
