Protrusion Surgery ASO + Invisalign Lite Post-Surgical Orthodontic Treatment Period: 10 Months

The combination of double jaw surgery and Invisalign is what people nowadays call a “perfect match.”

There is a golden period for orthodontic treatment right after surgery, when root resorption is minimal and tooth movement is faster. If this period is used properly, the overall treatment time can be greatly shortened.

Today, I’ll show you a case in which the space that inevitably appears after protrusion surgery (ASO) was finished using Invisalign Lite.

This patient visited one month after protrusion surgery in October 2024.

Protrusion surgery is commonly abbreviated as ASO, and it is a procedure in which bone equivalent to the space of a premolar is removed to move the front teeth backward.

If the protrusion is severe, or if orthodontic treatment alone cannot achieve a satisfactory improvement due to skeletal limitations, protrusion surgery may be considered.

Compared with double jaw surgery, it is a much safer procedure.

When protrusion surgery is performed, technically, a space of about 2 mm or more remains where the premolars used to be.

A 2 mm space remained behind each canine.

The key to orthodontic treatment after protrusion surgery is to use this ambiguously remaining space for aligning the front teeth.

This amount of remaining space can be handled within 14 aligners, so Invisalign Lite is sufficient.

The appliance was ordered in October 2024, and the patient began wearing it in November 2024.
