Hello
I’ll introduce protrusive mouth correction.
I’ll explain what happens to the oral cavity and smile line in extraction orthodontic treatment for a protrusive mouth.
Beyond simply aligning the teeth and setting the mouth back, I’ll also explain what the attending doctor can do to further improve the completeness of the result.
I hope this is helpful for those who want protrusive mouth correction.

A young patient in their 20s visited for protrusive mouth correction.

The teeth are fairly aligned, and the molar bite is good, but the front teeth are protruding.

You can see lip incompetence, where the mouth does not close well.
When the lips are relaxed and the teeth are still slightly exposed with the mouth parted, that is called lip incompetence.
It naturally improves once the protrusion of the front teeth is corrected.
The treatment plan was to extract four premolars and clearly improve the protrusive mouth.
The patient chose the Clippy-C appliance, and treatment started right away.

This is what it looked like seven months after treatment began.
This is the stage where the extraction spaces have just started to close and the front teeth are beginning to move back.

This photo was taken 1 year and 1 month after treatment started.
All extraction spaces have closed, and mini-screws are being used to adjust the midline.
This is the stage often called the finishing process.
And 1 year and 7 months after treatment began, the orthodontic treatment was finally completed and the appliance was removed.

24.09
The midline has been corrected,

24.09
and the bite is also good.

23.02~24.09
The total treatment period was 1 year and 7 months.
Although regular extraction orthodontic treatment is often said to take about 2 years, for young patients up to their early 20s, the most common duration is around 1 year and 6 months to 2 years.

These are front-view smile photos before and after.
An oral cavity that was not originally there has formed inside the left and right corners of the mouth.
A properly sized oral cavity that is not too large is important for smile aesthetics.

23.02~24.09
Another thing that cannot be left out in smile aesthetics is the smile line.
The smile line refers to the line connecting the edges of the upper teeth.
It looks beautiful when this is parallel to the lower lip while smiling.
The smile line, which was too flat and straight compared with the lower lip, changed into a rounded shape parallel to the lower lip.

23.02~24.09
The lip incompetence has been resolved, so now the lips close naturally even when relaxed.

23.02~24.09
Protrusive mouth, but plump lips?
If you undergo extraction orthodontic treatment, your impression will change within 2 years.
These lips protect against the many concerns people have about orthodontic side effects on lip appearance, such as the philtrum lengthening, lips turning inward, and lips becoming thinner.

23.02~24.09
The lips became more attractive without being overdone.
The curve from the nose down to the upper lip is especially beautiful.

The root parallelism is good, and no particular side effects are visible.
That concludes my introduction to protrusive mouth correction.
Thank you.
