Hello, I am Shin Seung-hwan, the director of 연세유라인치과의원 가락동점, located near Garak Market Station in Garak-dong, Songpa-gu.
Today, I would like to talk about how long treated teeth can be used.

When providing dental treatment, both patients and I hope that the treated teeth will last a long time, but realistically, there are also cases in which this does not happen.
Let me explain why, one point at a time.

It is easy to think that dental work, such as a crown or filling, can continue to be used as long as it does not come off.
That is generally true, but there are cases in which replacement is necessary even if the restoration has not broken or fallen out.

If a small cavity has been simply filled with resin, it can be checked visually during regular examinations.
If there is no discoloration and the filling has not come off, you may continue using it as it is.

However, treatments that use cement, such as gold inlays or crowns, are a little different.
This is because the cement gradually dissolves over time due to saliva and the force of chewing.

On average, the bonding strength weakens after about 7–8 years.
Around the 10-year mark, cavities may develop around the restoration or cracks may form, so it should be checked carefully.

Another factor is teeth grinding, which can cause restorations to deteriorate more quickly.
Strong force is applied not only during the day but also while you are asleep at night.

The force generated by grinding during sleep is much stronger than normal chewing force, so the restoration may break or come off earlier than expected.
Therefore, if you grind your teeth, you should have them examined more frequently.

The same applies to bridges.
They were a treatment often used instead of implants, but because they are supported by the teeth on both sides, they become longer and may develop movement.

For this reason, it can be difficult for them to last a full 10 years. If you notice movement or gaps, you should consider replacement.

So, what can you do to use them for as long as possible?
First, brush your teeth well as a basic measure.
The most important thing is to brush thoroughly so that cavities do not develop.

Second, avoid tough foods.
Tough foods such as squid or dried meat place a significant burden on your teeth and restorations.

Third, if you grind your teeth, you should actively consider using a device such as a splint.
Finally, it is a good idea to identify any issues in advance through regular examinations and replace the restoration with a smaller treatment if necessary.
To summarize, I generally say that restorations can be used for approximately 10 years, but their lifespan may be shortened by various factors, including teeth grinding, bite problems, and the structure of a bridge.
However, with a little attention to maintenance and lifestyle habits, you may be able to use them for longer.
This is something we also always emphasize at 연세유라인치과의원 가락동점: regular examinations and proper care ultimately determine how long treated teeth last.
Please continue caring for your teeth after treatment so that you can maintain them in good health for a long time.
