Hello.
Are you searching because of gum recession?
I’m Oh Tae-hoon, chief director of D-Day Dental Clinic.

Not long ago in the treatment room,
something truly unfortunate happened.
A man
"Doctor,
my gums seem to be receding again."
"Is this normal?"
came in with a worried expression and said that.

Many people look in the mirror and
think, "Huh? Why do my teeth look so long?"
and have been surprised like that before.
Gum recession, where the gums gradually recede
and the tooth roots become exposed,
is a more common problem than you might think.
However, most people think, "Isn't this just natural with age?"
and leave it untreated, which is very often the case.
If gum recession is left alone,
it does not simply remain an aesthetic issue.
As time passes, the teeth become sensitive,
cavities become more likely,
and in severe cases, you may even lose your teeth.

Gum recession: how it is treated
So today, as a practicing dentist, I will personally
share two key truths about gum recession.
If you read just this one post carefully,
I’m confident that all your questions about
gum recession will be answered.
- The real cause of gum recession
Many people simply think gum recession is
"because of age,"
but that is a very big misunderstanding.
Of course, gums do become weaker with age,
but there is another main cause.
The first cause is incorrect brushing.
You may think, "But I brush hard, so why?" and that is exactly where the trap is.
Brushing too hard with a hard-bristled toothbrush,
or brushing with a side-to-side rubbing motion,
gradually damages the gums.

It works in much the same way as rubbing wallpaper too hard and making it peel.
Damage builds up little by little every day,
and then at some point the gums recede noticeably.
The second cause is periodontal disease.
When inflammation develops in the gums, the jawbone beneath them is absorbed, and the gums naturally recede as well.
What is especially frightening is that there are almost no symptoms in the early stages.
You think, "It doesn't really hurt that much," and then one day you suddenly notice that your teeth have become longer.

The third cause is teeth grinding or bite problems.
If you unconsciously grind your teeth while sleeping
or have a habit of chewing only on one side,
excessive force is placed on certain areas,
damaging the gums.
The most important thing is that these causes
often work together.
That is why it is difficult to find a fundamental solution without an accurate diagnosis.
- Gum recession: how it is treated
"Then once the gums have receded,
can they never go back up?" many people worry.
To answer first:
depending on the severity, it can definitely be improved.
In cases of mild gum recession,
learning the correct brushing method,
and consistently massaging the gums
can prevent further progression.
Using a soft toothbrush
and brushing in an up-and-down sweeping motion is key.
For moderate or more severe gum recession,
more active treatment is needed.

Through a surgery called root coverage,
gum tissue from another area is grafted
to cover the receded area.
You may think, "Surgery sounds scary,"
but it is actually a relatively simple procedure.
Under local anesthesia, it takes about 30 minutes,
and it does not greatly interfere with daily life.
Recently, various methods such as laser-based treatment
and regenerative procedures have been developed.
It is important to choose the most suitable
treatment method according to the patient’s condition.
But above all, prevention is the most important.
By developing proper brushing habits
and receiving regular scaling,
more than 90% of gum recession can be prevented.
Gum recession is absolutely not a "natural aging phenomenon."
It is a problem that can improve sufficiently
if the exact cause is identified and appropriate treatment is received.
Above all, early detection and treatment are the most important.

If you look in the mirror and think,
"My teeth seem longer than they used to be,"
please do not hesitate to visit a dental clinic.
I am sure that small attention will be the
first step in protecting healthy gums.
