Im E-seok, Director, Appears on SBS Good Morning

Hello,
This is Im E-seok The Theme Dermatology Clinic.
Director Im E-seok appeared as a consultant on the SBS Good Morning Smart Smart! Counseling Center segment.
He talked about the causes that accelerate winter skin aging, helpful tips for UV care, and the right way to care for your skin. Let’s take a closer look at the details.

In the cold winter, one of the causes of rapid aging is photoaging.
Photoaging refers to ultraviolet rays causing oxidation reactions in the skin, which leads to cellular aging. Photoaging can damage the skin’s collagen, elastic fibers, and blood vessels, so even in winter, you need to pay attention to sun protection.

Although winter sunlight may seem weaker than summer sunlight, photoaging can still occur in winter.
There are two types of sunlight: UVB, which causes strong damage to the skin, and UVA, which causes damage more slowly. In particular, UVA penetrates the dermis and progresses aging, so you must block ultraviolet rays even in winter.

Because skin damage inevitably increases during the dry winter season, sufficient moisturizing is essential. It is also good to moisturize well before applying sunscreen.
When the skin loses moisture, it becomes itchy and you scratch it, damaging the skin barrier and causing even more damage over time.
In particular, the skin around the eyes is thin, so wrinkles appear in a shape that spreads out like a crow’s claws. Since there are few sebaceous glands around the eyes, moisturizing is difficult, so you need to pay extra attention to hydration. For eye-area wrinkle care, it is good to apply eye cream and then gently tap it in with your ring finger to help it absorb.

In winter, the number of patients with blemishes, melasma, and pigment-related conditions also rises sharply.
The difference between melasma and freckles can be distinguished by their appearance.
Freckles are brownish-yellow spots that look as if small grains of sesame seeds have been scattered across the skin, and they are characterized by forming in childhood and decreasing with age.
By contrast, melasma commonly occurs in people in their 30s and 40s, appearing as dark brown patches on the forehead and cheekbone area.
Frequent sauna sessions and baths can trigger melasma, so it is better to do them in moderation for winter skin care.
