Choosing based on color alone,

why might you regret it later?

Not long ago, a patient came in and showed me a picture on her phone.

“Please make mine as bright white as this person’s,” she said.

She told me that her yellowish-looking front teeth had been bothering her constantly with a blind date coming up.

I completely understand how she felt.

But before deciding on a color, I spent quite some time looking at her face shape, lip line, and the extent to which her gums showed when she smiled.

Tooth color is not made up of a single tone, like painting a wall with one can of paint.

The edges are slightly translucent, like glass, while the inner areas have a subtle ivory hue and reflect light differently depending on the angle.

So if you simply choose the whitest shade without further consideration, the teeth can easily look awkwardly prominent, as though a sheet of white paper had been placed over them.

What exactly is treatment with front teeth veneers?

Veneers are a treatment in which an extremely thin layer of ceramic is bonded to the outer surface of the teeth to refine both their shape and color.

It may help to picture a ceramic bowl being coated with a thin layer of glaze.

Like placing a thin nail tip over a fingernail, a delicate plate approximately 0.3–0.5 mm thick is precisely bonded to the front teeth.

People mainly come in with concerns such as these:

Teeth that remain yellowish no matter how much they are brushed, a slight gap between the front teeth, or one side that has chipped or worn down, making the teeth look uneven in length.

Whitening can brighten the color alone, but when someone also wants to improve the shape and proportions, veneers become an option to consider.

Most people who come in for consultations about Apgujeong front teeth veneers also have several of these concerns overlapping, rather than being concerned about color alone.

There are different approaches to veneers

Not all veneers are the same.

Broadly speaking, there is a no-prep approach, in which thin ceramic is bonded with little to no reshaping of the natural teeth, and a minimal-prep approach, in which the surface is very lightly prepared before bonding.

The advantage of the no-prep approach is that it preserves as much of the natural tooth as possible.

Since little reshaping is required, there is also generally less concern about sensitivity.

However, if the original teeth are very yellow or protrude outward significantly, the added thickness may make them look bulky, so this approach is not suitable for everyone.

With the minimal-prep approach, the surface is lightly prepared, allowing the veneer to remain thin while creating a more natural shape.

Which approach is appropriate should be decided by considering both the condition of the teeth and the desired appearance.

In terms of materials, veneers are divided into ceramic and resin.

Ceramic subtly holds and reflects light like natural teeth, so it tends to look less noticeable even in sunlight.

Resin can be completed in a single session and is less costly, but it is also important to know that its color may change over time.

In this sense, Apgujeong front teeth veneers are less about choosing a color and more about designing the approach, material, and shape that suit your teeth.

The questions I hear most often in the treatment room

Q. I am afraid that a lot of my perfectly healthy front teeth will have to be shaved down.

A. Many people have that concern. We first consider methods that reduce the amount of reshaping, such as the no-prep or minimal-prep approaches mentioned earlier. Since the amount of preparation varies depending on the condition of the teeth, I explain honestly how much reshaping will be needed after the examination, and then we decide together.

Q. My teeth feel sensitive even when I only drink an iced Americano. Won’t veneers make them even more sensitive?

A. If your teeth are usually sensitive, we examine that issue first. The less reshaping that is required, the lower the burden of sensitivity tends to be, but each person may experience it differently, so we check your condition beforehand and then decide whether to proceed.

Q. Can’t I just choose the whitest shade?

A. It is possible. However, if you apply the whitest shade without considering your skin tone, lip color, and harmony with the adjacent teeth, your teeth may appear to float on their own in photographs. This is why, if you want to feel satisfied with your Apgujeong front teeth veneers for a long time, I often recommend considering a shade that is about one level more natural.

Q. Do they last for life once they are placed? How should I care for them?

A. It is difficult to say that they will remain unchanged for life. Their lifespan varies depending on your gum health and care habits. Reducing the habit of biting hard foods with your front teeth and having them checked regularly can help you use them comfortably for longer.

I look at the person’s smile, not just the color

Let us return to the story at the beginning.

The patient who had a blind date coming up ultimately chose a shade that was one tone calmer and more natural, rather than a bright white.

A few days later, I remember her smiling as she said, “People told me they didn’t even realize I had been to the dentist.”

I believe that each front tooth forms part of a person’s first impression when facing the world.

That is why, rather than rushing to choose a single color, I try to take the time to examine the shape, proportions, and gum line together.
