Hello :D
I’m from Maggok Dental Clinic,
where we WISH for everyone’s beautiful smile.
After heading to work early in the morning,
spending time with friends afterward,
and then finishing such a busy day
and coming home to wash up...
while brushing your teeth as usual and looking in the mirror,
you may suddenly notice something strange
between your teeth.
When you look closely at something that seemed
dark enough to make you think, “Did I get a cavity?”
it turns out to be a black triangular space.

Oh, what is this all of a sudden?
Are my teeth separating?
Haa... am I getting old now too?
It’s easy to think that way.
In fact, as people get older, the gums
often gradually recede and move downward.
(Even so, it still causes aesthetic problems...)
However, this can actually be a sign
that a warning light has turned on
for your oral health.
Let’s look at when that happens,
starting with what this black triangle is,
its causes, treatment, and how to prevent it.
Black Triangle.

First, the black space between teeth
as shown above is called a “black triangle.”
At Maggok Dental Clinic, we’ll explain
what this is.
BLACK TRIANGLE
As the space between teeth widens and gingival recession progresses,
the gap gradually narrows downward,
creating a shape that looks like a triangle,
and because it can also look like something dark has been stuck there,
that name was given to it.
If the periodontal tissues are healthy,
this area should be well covered.
However, when recession occurs,
it becomes exposed like the image above.

So, what problems can this cause?
Let’s take a look.
First, there is the aesthetic issue.
In particular, with front teeth, the teeth may appear separated
and longer,
which can reduce confidence.
Since the mouth opens more when speaking or smiling,
the area can become hard to ignore,
and many people reportedly become unconsciously awkward
and self-conscious.
In addition, food can easily get trapped in the gap,
so plaque may build up,
and the condition may progress to periodontal disease.
And if it gets worse,
the roots may even become exposed,
which can make teeth sensitive to even minor stimuli,
causing discomfort in daily life in various ways.
Causes of Black Triangle
Next, what Maggok Dental Clinic
will cover is
“Why does this happen in the first place?”
As in the examples above, some people may simply say,
“Well, it just happens as you get older.”
and move on.

But in fact, one cause of this gap is
(1) periodontal disease.
When inflammation occurs in the gums,
the alveolar bone gradually dissolves,
and as the bone disappears, the tissue covering it
also moves downward, making it look like a gap.
Another cause is
(2) poor oral hygiene.
If you have not brushed properly,
or if you frequently eat sugary foods,
plaque and other bacteria accumulate,
and they cause inflammation,
destroying the surrounding tissues.
That is why, along with brushing after meals,
we recommend drinking enough water
to help prevent dry mouth.

Next, (3) excessive brushing.
It’s ironic that something done to protect your health
can instead cause disease.
However, brushing too hard can damage
the gingival area and cause recession.
Rather than brushing with excessive force,
it is more important to brush thoroughly.
And (4) smoking cannot be left out.
In fact, harmful substances in cigarettes
interfere with blood circulation,
reduce regenerative ability,
constrict blood vessels,
weaken immune function,
and slow the healing of inflammation.
They can also create a dry environment,
making it easier for bacteria to multiply.
And as people say,
(5) aging also has an effect,
so it cannot be ruled out.
However, depending on how well a person manages it,
the progression can be slowed.
Can it be prevented in daily life?

Here at Maggok Dental Clinic, let’s summarize
ways to prevent it in daily life.
If you look closely at the factors above,
you can find the clues.
It can be managed sufficiently
with proper brushing.
The goal of brushing is to thoroughly remove bacteria
left on the enamel surface
or on the adjacent surfaces between teeth.
That is why the angle and direction matter,
as well as what you use to brush with.
For example, it is better to choose a toothbrush with a small head
and dense bristles.
Also, rather than brushing in a straight line, use a 45-degree angle,
and instead of brushing side to side,
brush the upper teeth from top to bottom
and the lower teeth from bottom to top
with a sweeping motion.
Using dental floss and interdental brushes together
is a good way to care for the spaces between adjacent teeth as well.

We also recommend quitting smoking and drinking less.
As mentioned above, smoking
can be seen as one of the worst factors
for oral health.
If you have periodontal disease,
we strongly recommend that you quit smoking.
With alcohol, the problem is not the drinking itself,
but rather that people may neglect brushing afterward.
Also, excessive drinking lowers immunity,
which means an environment where bacteria can grow more easily.
Therefore, we ask that you make sure to
quit smoking and drink less.
Lastly, regular checkups
should not be left out.
The interval may vary from person to person,
but on average, we recommend once every 6 months to once a year,
and through this, tartar in areas
that toothbrushes could not reach
can be thoroughly removed in detail.
It also has the advantage of allowing early response
when a disease is found,
which is why many experts emphasize it so strongly.
Does it look more noticeable after scaling?

However, some people say that after scaling,
the gap seems even more noticeable.
At Maggok Dental Clinic, let’s explain why that happens.
To give the conclusion first:
It’s all a misunderstanding!
It has not become more pronounced.
If chronic inflammation is present,
that area will remain swollen.
Or white tartar may have been taking up that space.
The swelling or tartar had simply been hiding the gap,
not making it more prominent.
In other words, everything means that,
as a result of treatment, it is recovering.
Black Triangle Treatment

So then, how can a space like this be treated?
Let Maggok Dental Clinic tell you.
First, resin filling can be used.
This method works by attaching resin to the tooth
to cover the space,
and it also has the advantages of being simple,
inexpensive, and requiring no removal of tooth structure.
Another solution is laminate veneer,
which is a procedure that adds a thin layer,
and depending on the case, some tooth reduction may be needed.
Also, depending on the extent,
crowns may be considered as an alternative.
In addition to these restorative methods,
there is also a way to improve it through orthodontic treatment.

IPR orthodontics (Interproximal Reduction)
is a solution that secures space between teeth
and then aligns the arrangement more precisely,
and it works by slightly reducing the sides of the teeth
to widen the space,
then repositioning the teeth with orthodontic treatment
to improve the black triangle.
Yes, that concludes everything I prepared today.
From now on, even if you see something dark in the mirror,
you’ll be able to respond well.
Above all, the key is to maintain sufficient gum care
in daily life,
so as to preserve various periodontal conditions
and overall oral health.
Please keep this in mind,
and let’s work together to
regain the beautiful smile
we had from the beginning.
With that, I’ll wrap up everything here
and take my leave.
Thank you very much for reading this long post.
This has been Maggok Dental Clinic, Yonsei Wish.
I hope the rest of your day is peaceful :D
