Recently, the injectable medications
'Wegovy • Mounjaro' shortages
have been occurring.
Many people are paying attention to Mounjaro,
which is known to have greater weight-loss effects than Wegovy.
Like Wegovy, Mounjaro is a medication that can be prescribed to patients with a BMI of 30 or higher,
or with a BMI of 27 or higher and comorbidities such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
Therefore, like other medications,
side effects may occur.
Today, let’s take a look at muscle pain symptoms related to Mounjaro.

Mounjaro ingredient, GLP-1, GIP dual receptors
Mounjaro is
an injectable weight-loss medication
based on the ingredient
Tirzepatide.
Tirzepatide is characterized by
simultaneously activating two incretin hormones:
GLP-1 and GIP.
It lowers blood sugar, reduces appetite,
and delays gastric emptying to increase satiety.
In other words, Mounjaro is a medication that aims at three effects at the same time:
'Appetite suppression • metabolic regulation • promotion of fat burning'
Then,
what is GIP (Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide)?
GIP helps insulin secretion and is used to treat diabetes and obesity,
but it also plays a role in preventing the accumulation of fat and glucose.
It is said to help GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1),
which promotes insulin secretion,
suppresses glucagon secretion to lower blood sugar,
and delays gastric emptying to keep you feeling full longer,
thereby helping weight management and further enhancing weight-loss effects.
In Mounjaro clinical trials,
results were announced showing that with 15 mg use,
after 72 weeks,
there was an average weight-loss effect of more than 15–20% of body weight.
⚠️ There are no plans to launch the 15 mg dose in Korea

Mounjaro muscle pain side effect,
why does it happen?
Like Wegovy,
Mounjaro most commonly causes gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea & vomiting,
diarrhea or constipation,
abdominal discomfort,
indigestion,
and decreased appetite.
However, some users also complain of pain at the injection site or muscle pain.
In large-scale clinical trials,
muscle pain was very rare at 1%,
so it is not a common side effect,
but pain may still be felt.
- Injection site reaction
As the medication enters the subcutaneous tissue,
it may temporarily clump or
cause irritation.
During this process, pain or bruising
may occur.
This can be felt differently depending on where the injection is given,
and it is closely related to why injections are often given in the abdomen.
In the abdomen, the nervous system structure is not densely packed,
so the area where pain can be felt after an injection is broader depending on the site.
- Systemic reaction
As metabolic processes in the body change,
symptoms that feel like muscle pain can appear during the stage when the body adapts to a new environment.
It can be compared to how muscles feel sore when you first start exercising.

How to respond when you have muscle pain symptoms
While using Mounjaro, muscle pain may occur due to dehydration,
reduced protein intake,
rapid weight loss,
a sudden increase in exercise,
large blood sugar fluctuations,
or overlapping muscle-pain side effects from other medications such as statins.
👉 Drink enough water: 1.5–2 L per day
👉 Protein supplementation: 1–1.2 g per kg of body weight (e.g., 60 kg -> 60–70 g)
👉 Electrolyte supplementation: intake of potassium and magnesium
👉 Adjust exercise intensity: do not suddenly overdo exercise
👉 Pain reliever: consider acetaminophen (Tylenol) if needed
Mounjaro is an innovative medication that provides two effects at once — appetite suppression and blood sugar control — through two gut hormones,
but as its powerful weight-loss effects have been proven,
there are clearly also risks of side effects.
Therefore, it is important to carefully check the medical team’s experience
and the follow-up care system as well.

Above all, it was most important to choose a program that fits your health condition
and weight-loss goals.
At Bliss Clinic,
we help create plans for healthy weight loss
through Wegovy, Mounjaro, and the DT7 program.
