Hello. This is Merry Plastic Surgery Clinic, which pursues natural and beautiful changes.
Many of you may already know the Korean idiom 과유불급 (過猶不及).
It means that anything excessive is worse than not having enough, and it can be used in a wide range of situations.
In particular, when trying to take care of our health, we often consume various foods and supplements all at once.
But did you know that some ingredients can actually become harmful to your health when eaten together?
Today, let’s take a look at foods that should not be eaten together.
Foods That Should Not Be Eaten Together
✅ Black tea + honey

For people who are not used to it, the astringent taste of black tea can be difficult to drink.
For that reason, syrup, sugar, honey, and similar ingredients are often added to neutralize the astringency.
Among these sweeteners, honey is often chosen because it is somewhat better for health than other forms of sugar.
But did you know that black tea and honey are foods that should not be eaten together?
The bitter, astringent taste of black tea usually comes from a component called tannin.
Tannin helps improve cholesterol levels and supports antibacterial action.
However, when tannin meets the iron that is abundant in honey, it binds into a compound called iron tannate, which is not absorbed by the body and is excreted instead.
So if your goal is to take in the tannins in black tea, in this case we recommend using a small amount of sugar or a sugar substitute rather than honey.
✅ Crab + persimmon

A 대표적으로 알려져 있는 같이 먹으면 안되는 음식으로는 게와 감이 있습니다.
Crab is a high-protein food, and bacteria that cause shellfish-related food poisoning can multiply quickly in it.
The substance responsible for persimmon’s astringent taste is also tannin, which was introduced earlier in black tea.
Because tannin helps the body’s astringent action, it can promote the absorption of crab-related food-poisoning bacteria into the body and may lead to indigestion, food poisoning, and more.
✅ Peach + eel

Peaches and eel are also among the foods that should not be eaten together. When fatty eel meets the organic acids in peaches, it can interfere with fat digestion and cause severe stomach pain, diarrhea, and more, so you should be careful.
✅ Sweet potato + beef

If you are on a diet these days, you may choose sweet potatoes as a healthy source of carbohydrates.
At that time, if you choose beef instead of chicken to supplement protein, this is also a food combination you should avoid.
Sweet potatoes and beef require different concentrations of stomach acid for digestion.
So when eaten together, they can interfere with digestion and with the absorption of each ingredient.
✅ Sugar + tomato

When you think of childhood snacks, especially in summer, watermelon and tomatoes were hard to leave out.
Among them, many of you may remember cutting up tomatoes and sprinkling them with sugar.
However, sugar is also a food that should not be eaten together with tomatoes because it destroys the vitamins in tomatoes. If possible, a light drizzle of honey or a small amount of salt can actually make the sweetness seem stronger and help the nutrients be absorbed.
✅ Beer + peanuts

Lastly, the foods we’ll look at are beer and peanuts.
When drinking beer, many people enjoy peanuts and other nuts as a light snack, but these two can cause indigestion and stomach pain when consumed together.
Because peanuts are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, they can interfere with the breakdown of alcohol in beer and may instead lead to a hangover, so please be careful.
