Hello, this is Merry Plastic Surgery Clinic, glad to meet you.
These days, there is more interest than ever in zero sugar, zero-calorie drinks, alternative sweeteners, and more.
There has recently been another debate over the safety of aspartame, so we looked into it.
💡 Can’t give up sweet drinks even while dieting?
💡 Are zero-calorie drinks okay to drink?
💡 Is aspartame really safe?
Aspartame keeps sweetness while lowering calories,
but recently, as concerns about its possible cancer risk have emerged, many people are worried.
Is aspartame really safe? Let’s fact-check it through reliable research results and expert opinions!

Aspartame,
is it really dangerous?
First, do you know where aspartame is found?
-
Diet drinks 🥤
-
Sugar-free gum 🍬
-
Low-calorie desserts 🍰
-
Protein supplements 🥛
You can now find it in so many drinks, foods, and snacks.
🚨The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies aspartame as a “possible carcinogen”!🚨
Looking into it, this seems to be why people became alert.
Recently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), under the World Health Organization (WHO), announced that it would classify aspartame as a “possibly carcinogenic to humans” substance (Group 2B).
Let’s take a look at what substances are in Group 2B.
Wait, why is kimchi here????
As you may have guessed,
being classified in Group 2B on the carcinogen list does not mean that aspartame actually causes cancer!

IARC evaluates whether a specific substance has a “possibility” of causing cancer.
This is only a possibility, and how often and how much you are exposed matters.
And for Groups 2A and 2B, there may also be insufficient research on their effects on the human body.
For example, kimchi and coffee are also classified as Group 2B, but that does not mean we get cancer from eating them every day!
Ultimately, it is difficult to conclude that aspartame is dangerous.
There is a lot of fear-based marketing these days, so caution is needed.
How much aspartame can you consume?
Then you may be wondering: how much aspartame is safe to consume?
The official position of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (FDA, EFSA) is,
that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the U.S. FDA have stated aspartame is safe within the acceptable daily intake (ADI).
Here comes another question: how much is that??
It is up to 40 mg per 1 kg of body weight.
For an adult weighing 60 kg, you would need to drink 12 to 36 cans of carbonated drinks containing aspartame to exceed it! That’s the amount.
Realistically, that is impossible.

Then, how should you consume it?
✅ Maintain a balanced diet – Don’t only consume products with artificial sweeteners; balance them with natural foods! 🥗
✅ 1 to 2 cans of drinks a day is okay! – At typical intake levels, there is no need to worry. 😊
✅ If possible, use a variety of sweeteners – Consider alternative sweeteners such as stevia and erythritol. 🍯
Aspartame is not necessarily dangerous!
International organizations have also stated that it is safe when consumed in appropriate amounts.
