Understanding the Causes of Frequent Urination
How to Improve and Prevent It

Urination is one of the body’s natural physiological functions,
but if you urinate too often, it may indicate a health problem.
In general, adults urinate 4 to 6 times while awake and 0 to 1 time
while sleeping. If you urinate more often than this or feel that you
urinate frequently, it may be frequent urination.
Today, we will look at what causes frequent urination and go over
methods for improving and preventing the symptoms, one by one.

In general, it is normal for adults to urinate no more than 10 times
a day. When urination exceeds this range and the number of times
you urinate increases abnormally, it is called frequent urination.
.
Frequent urination can occur for various reasons. First, one cause
of frequent urination is cystitis, a condition in which bacteria infect
the bladder through the urethra and inflammation occurs.
In the case of cystitis, women are at higher risk than men because
women have a shorter urethra and the anus and urethra are closer
together.

When cystitis develops, you may feel pain in the lower abdomen,
along with a stinging pain near the end of urination, and as time
passes, frequent urges to urinate may appear.
Stress is also one of the causes of frequent urination. Due to
hyperreactivity caused by an imbalance between the sympathetic
and parasympathetic nervous systems, frequent urination may occur.
When you are under a lot of stress, the autonomic nerves of the
bladder become sensitive, and symptoms such as feeling the urge
to urinate even when the bladder is not full may appear.

Excessive fluid intake is also one of the causes of frequent
urination. If you develop the habit of going to the bathroom often
because you drink a lot of fluids, later on you may develop a
urination habit of going frequently even after drinking only a little
water.
Symptoms can also appear due to an overactive bladder. An
overactive bladder refers to a urinary disorder that occurs when the
bladder’s own function weakens without bacterial infection.
When an overactive bladder develops, symptoms such as frequent
urination, sudden urges to urinate, and nocturia may occur.

Uterine fibroids can also cause frequent urination. When the size of
a benign tumor in the uterus increases, it can press on the bladder
and urethra, causing frequent urination and a feeling of incomplete
emptying.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia can also be a cause of symptoms. Along
with a weaker urine stream, various urinary abnormalities such as
frequent urination, a feeling of incomplete emptying, and urgent
urination may appear.
As such, frequent urination can occur for a variety of reasons. To
improve the symptoms, it is advisable to avoid wearing tight-fitting
underwear that can stimulate the urge to urinate.

Also, to improve and prevent symptoms, it is best to avoid caffeine,
which can increase urine output, and to limit alcohol as well, since
it can make you urinate more often.
Drinking a large amount of water at once can intensify the urge to
urinate, so if you usually have trouble holding your urine, it is best
to drink water in smaller amounts throughout the day and avoid
fluid intake before going to sleep.
