Hello, I’m Kim Tae-yoon, chief dentist at Shinsung Dental Clinic, a Jamwon Station dental clinic.
Today, I’d like to briefly share information about tooth staining.

Teeth may look smooth and hard on the outside,
but if you look closely at the surface, you’ll find very tiny grooves packed tightly together.
Because of these grooves, teeth are more likely to absorb pigments from strongly colored foods such as coffee, curry, and wine,
which eventually causes them to turn yellow from the inside.
- Why tooth staining happens
- The hidden secret of tooth structure (enamel)

The outermost layer of the tooth, enamel, is tissue made up of clusters of hexagonal mineral rods (hydroxyapatite).
At a glance, it only looks hard and smooth,
but in reality there are spaces between those hexagonal rods.
These spaces help disperse impact and make the tooth strong,
but they also have the downside of making it easier for pigments to penetrate inward.
- Pigment penetration from food and drinks

Dark-colored foods and drinks such as coffee, black tea, curry, and wine can leave strong pigments on the tooth surface.
At first, staining progresses slowly, but at some point it may suddenly become noticeably yellow.
In particular, darker coffee such as Americano may cause more staining than latte, so caution is needed.
- The effects of calcium, iron, and smoking

Because saliva also contains calcium and iron, a black or brown band may appear near the gum line even if you take good care of your mouth.
This can be easily removed with scaling.
Meanwhile, nicotine and tar from cigarettes are among the biggest enemies of tooth staining.
These pigments stick to the tooth surface, leaving severe brown or black stains,
and they can also dry out the mouth, allowing harmful bacteria to multiply more easily.
- Foods that stain easily &
Cautions
- Coffee
Dark in color, and if consumed over a long period, discoloration may suddenly progress at some point.
- Wine
Red wine can stain teeth quickly, so caution is needed.
- Curry
If you are wearing orthodontic appliances, they can discolor easily too, so you need to pay even more attention.
Curry, black tea, chocolate, and similar foods can also leave color on the surface.
If you are wearing orthodontic appliances, the appliances themselves can discolor easily, so you need to be especially careful.
If it is difficult to stop completely, it may help to make a habit of lightly rinsing your mouth with water or brushing right after eating or drinking.
If you miss that immediate time after consumption, pigments can settle deep into the gaps of the teeth, making them much harder to remove later.
- How to prevent and manage tooth staining
- Proper brushing & regular checkups
Brushing carefully within 10 minutes after a meal, at least twice a day, is essential.
Using interdental brushes or dental floss together to remove food particles between the teeth is very helpful in preventing pigmentation.
It is also a good idea to receive regular scaling to remove tartar and stains.
At Shinsung Dental Clinic near Jamwon Station, with our extensive know-how built over 30 years in one location,
we provide oral care guidance tailored to each patient.
- Teeth whitening treatment

If staining has already progressed, you may want to consider teeth whitening.
Teeth whitening works on the principle that an oxidizing agent (such as hydrogen peroxide) penetrates the enamel and decolorizes pigment particles.
Unless the enamel itself has become thin and is making the teeth look yellow, consistent whitening treatment can create a fairly bright tooth color.
Based on the latest insights from a specialist certified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare,
Shinsung Dental Clinic near Jamwon Station provides guidance on the whitening method most suitable for each individual’s dental condition.
- Dietary adjustments

It is best to reduce intake of dark-colored foods such as coffee, wine, and curry, as well as carbonated drinks and foods high in sugar.
Rinsing your mouth after eating or using a straw can also help reduce pigment contact.
For smokers, quitting smoking is strongly recommended not only for tooth discoloration but also for overall oral health.

Teeth are a part of the human body that require special care because once they are damaged or discolored, it is difficult to restore them.
Proper prevention, regular care, and, if needed, help from a professional are wise choices.
Bright, beautiful teeth are not only a source of outward confidence,
but also an indicator of overall oral health.
Please keep in mind the causes of tooth staining, the prevention methods, and the easy tips for everyday life that I shared today,
and I hope you can maintain clean and healthy teeth throughout your life.
