Hello. I’m Wonjin Cho, the medical director of Chai Clinic, where I have been providing dermatological care in Hongdae for 10 years.

In fact, XERF is a device that my staff and I tried first and decided to bring in because we were pleased with it.
When introducing a new device, I believe the most reliable way to verify it is to experience it myself.
After XERF was launched, we were the first clinic in Mapo-gu to introduce it.
As a XERF ambassador, we have also proactively introduced the iXERF tip recently and are providing treatments with it.
That is how confidently I recommend this device.
However, just because it is a device that I am satisfied with does not mean I recommend it to everyone.
That is because a good device and a device that is right for me are two different things.
Today, I will honestly explain why that is the case and how to receive a XERF consultation without wasting your money.

When you receive a consultation, be sure to check the following three things.
There is a simple reason why there are so many lifting devices in the world.
Everyone’s face is different.
So rather than getting XERF without a second thought just because you heard that “XERF is popular these days,” it is much more important to first check whether it is suitable for your face.
The following three points are the areas I focus on most during actual consultations, and they are also the standards I use to distinguish a good consultation from an inadequate one.

Table of Contents
- Is your skin type assessed accurately?
This is the first thing that should be examined.
A quick, mechanical glance immediately before treatment is not a proper consultation.
Briefly looking over your face and saying, “Yes, you need this many shots in these areas,” before proceeding immediately is difficult to call a consultation in the first place.
It is possible that XERF may not be suitable for your skin at all.
Discussing where and how to treat you only after all the equipment has been set up and you are already lying on the treatment table is completely out of order.

At that stage, it is difficult for anyone to say, “It is not suitable, so let’s stop.”
That is why I first take sufficient time in the consultation room, rather than the treatment room, to carefully examine the patient’s skin type, degree of sagging, and skin characteristics.
Depending on whether the skin is thin or thick, how much fat is present, and where the sagging began, there are cases where XERF has clear strengths and cases where another treatment is definitely more suitable.
Only after going through this process can we honestly determine whether XERF is suitable for your face.
If a clinic proceeds directly to treatment without this review, I recommend pausing and thinking it over.
- Is the appropriate number of shots determined?
The tip area of XERF is approximately 1.5 times larger than that of Thermage.
Simply put, even if you receive the same 600 shots, you can think of it as delivering approximately the energy of 900 Thermage shots.
Therefore, you should not simply compare the number of shots with other devices. The number of shots needs to be recalculated according to XERF’s characteristics.
When determining the number of shots, the key is not simply “more,” but the appropriate number of shots based on the characteristics of each area.

You should not be advised to receive unnecessarily excessive shots that only increase the cost, nor should you be advised to receive too few shots to produce an improvement.
This balance is the part I pay the most attention to during consultations.
I believe a proper consultation means identifying exactly what each person’s face needs—not too much and not too little.
Excessive shots only increase the financial burden and do not necessarily lead directly to better results.
Too few shots can lead to a result that makes people wonder whether the treatment was worthwhile, leaving behind the misconception that “XERF is not very effective.”
I do not recommend the idea that “more shots are always better.”
- Is the expected improvement by treatment area understood?
Hongdae XERF is not a treatment that applies the same energy to the entire face at one uniform depth.
The depth and energy required differ from one area to another.
For example, the area around the eyes is contoured and has thin skin, so results are better when it is treated precisely at a shallow depth using the small iXERF tip.

If a large tip is used around the eyes, there may be areas where the energy is not delivered properly.
On the other hand, XERF’s fundamental strength is that it can improve the elasticity of the skin’s surface according to depth while also addressing sagging in the lower face—the jawline and cheeks.
Stimulating the dermal layer close to the surface can improve fine lines and skin texture, while delivering energy to deeper layers can help define a weakened jawline and cheek contour.
Proper results can only be achieved when treatment is carried out with different depth and energy settings for each area.
That is why the practitioner needs to understand the characteristics of each area thoroughly.
Above all, sufficient treatment time must be secured to attend to these details.
Even with the same XERF treatment, the results can differ depending on whether the settings are adjusted separately for the eye area and jawline, or whether the same settings are used to treat the face quickly from beginning to end.
It is difficult to achieve this level of precision with a treatment that is rushed to finish quickly.

During your consultation, it is a good idea to check whether the clinic explains “which areas will be treated, at what depth, and why.”
The clearer this explanation is, the more likely it is that the treatment will be performed with an equivalent level of precision.
In addition, the results of laser devices can also vary depending on how detailed the treatment records are.
If these records are not properly managed, it can be difficult to obtain the full benefit of the treatment.
I have written more about this in the article below.
Conclusion: You need a proper consultation for XERF, too
No matter how good Hongdae XERF may be as a device, the only way to know whether it will be effective for your face is to go through a proper consultation.
That is how you avoid wasting your money.
This is the situation I am most concerned about.
Paying the same amount for a treatment that does not suit your skin and failing to see results is a loss for you, and ultimately leaves you disappointed with the treatment as a whole.
That is why I do not recommend XERF to everyone, even though it is a device I am satisfied with.

I confidently recommend it to those for whom it is suitable, and honestly guide those for whom it is not toward other options.
Because I personally tried the device before bringing it in, I take pride in knowing better than anyone which patients may respond well and which may find the results disappointing.
I believe that accurately making this judgment is ultimately the best way to serve the patient.
If you are considering Hongdae XERF, I recommend receiving a consultation that accurately assesses your skin condition before rushing into treatment.
If you find a clinic that properly evaluates your skin type, determines the appropriate number of shots, and performs detailed treatment by area, you can achieve a much more satisfying result for the same cost.
Ultimately, that is the fastest way forward and the way to minimize loss.
Thank you. This has been Wonjin Cho.
