A nose shape called a hump nose
resembles the beak of a bird.
This refers to a case in which, due to excessive development from the nasal bone to the nasal cartilage,
the middle part is high while the beginning and end are low, forming a long shape.
In general, this shape is seen more often in Westerners than in East Asians, but as the economy has
developed and not only diet but also lifestyle has changed from the past, this related shape is also
gradually increasing in Korea.

If we look at the causes, they can be divided into two.
One is when the nasal bone grows excessively during the growth process.
The other can be an acquired cause such as an accident, trauma, or a deviated septum.
During the growth period, cartilage also grows rapidly, so the shape of the nose can change noticeably.
A nose that was smooth in childhood changing into a hump nose as it grows is also due to this reason.
If the tip cartilage does not grow properly compared with the growth of the nasal bone and bridge,
only the bridge bone may stand out, and if the septal cartilage grows excessively compared with the size
of the nasal cavity, this can also cause hump nose symptoms.

For acquired factors rather than congenital reasons, there are not only direct impact to the nasal bone,
but also complications caused by the worsening of various conditions such as a deviated septum,
rhinitis, and sinusitis.
Even if the nasal bone is injured after a blow, these symptoms can occur if it regenerates excessively
during the recovery process.
If the septal cartilage is excessively large here, it can bend and cause symptoms such as nasal
obstruction.
Not every hump nose is like this, but depending on the structure of the nose and the internal shape,
functional problems can occur. So if your nose is often blocked, getting a diagnosis may be a good
option.

In addition, the nose is located at the center of the face and is an important part not only for creating
dimensionality but also for achieving a trendy appearance.
A low nose can give a gentle and comfortable impression, while a high nose can convey a strong and sharp image.
That is why more and more people want correction, since not only the height of the nose but also the
curvature of the bridge can give an unstable and strong impression.
What should be noted here is that in Western cases, the nose is often large due to excessive development,
and since height is included as well, the overall procedure often takes the form of reduction.

Among East Asians as well, in Korea there are many cases of small hump noses, which means it is necessary
to set the correction range for hump nose surgery not only by size but also by detailed design.
There are actually various types, and classification is possible based on the height between the eyes,
the length of the nasal bridge, and the height of the tip. Depending on each type, implants may be used
or not used.
There are several criteria, such as whether the area between the eyes is moderate, high, or low, whether
the bridge is short or long, and whether the tip height is moderate, high, or low.
According to a study that examined about 450 people over the past five years, a hump nose can be
subdivided using the criteria mentioned above, and when performing hump nose surgery, it is also
possible to divide cases by whether an implant is needed.
For hump nose surgery, these points must be checked so the procedure can be carried out.

If the area between the eyes is at an appropriate height and the tip is high, it can be sufficiently
corrected by removing only the hump without inserting an implant.
If the area between the eyes is at an appropriate height while the tip is low and short, hump removal can
also be performed without the help of an implant, while slightly raising the tip and lengthening the nose
to carry out the hump nose surgery.
If the area between the eyes is at an appropriate height while the tip is low and long, hump removal and
tip shortening surgery alone can be enough to perform hump nose surgery.
However, if the bridge is low and the tip height is acceptable, correction can be done by removing the
hump while simultaneously raising the bridge. If only the area between the eyes is low, hump nose surgery
using filler may also be possible.
If the area between the eyes is low and short, correction can be planned by raising the bridge after hump
removal and lengthening the tip. If the area between the eyes is low and the tip is also low and long,
hanging downward, hump nose surgery can be considered by raising the bridge and performing tip
shortening surgery along with hump removal.

Hump nose surgery, which involves shaving down the protruding bridge bone, cannot be called simple and
is a difficult area that requires skilled technique.
In addition, after shaving the bridge bone, the space created between the tip and the hump can be made
smooth by filling it with autologous cartilage such as septal cartilage or ear cartilage.
Above all, the important thing is that although it has the shape of a hump, not every case is the same.
Even if a diagnosis has been made, there are differences in shape, form, and degree, so it is necessary to
check the symptoms according to the individual and proceed with a tailored process.

Postoperative care after hump nose surgery is also an important part.
For about three days after hump nose surgery, cold compresses should be used to help prevent additional
bleeding and reduce swelling.
Once the swelling has gone down to a certain level, the splint can be removed after about a week, and
the stitches can then be removed. After that, daily life is possible.
Blowing or touching the nose can be done about 2 to 3 weeks after hump nose surgery, but since there is a
concern about inflammation, it is best to avoid drinking, smoking, and high-intensity exercise for about a
month.
