My upper and lower front teeth do not touch each other,

and the teeth are protruding.

Today,

we would like to introduce a case of a re-treatment patient who had orthodontic treatment in the past and was worried because the upper and lower front teeth did not touch and the mouth protruded.

It looks like the molars are closed...

Do you see the space between the upper and lower teeth?

This is called an open bite.

In a normal bite, the upper teeth should cover the lower teeth by about one-quarter.

In cases of open bite, it is difficult to bite with the front teeth,

and force tends to concentrate on the molars,

which can lead to severe wear of the molars over the long term

and may have negative effects on the temporomandibular joint and chewing function.

The patient had an underbite,

and not only was the maxillary arch narrower than the mandible,

but the patient also wanted nonsurgical treatment,

so we decided to perform orthodontic treatment after maxillary expansion with a palatal expansion device (MARPE).

For the lower teeth,

we performed treatment by moving the molars backward using mini screws.

At Upenn Bareun Dental Clinic,

a Jamsil orthodontic clinic,

we carried out orthodontic treatment through arch expansion using an orthodontic appliance called “MARPE,”

a nonsurgical orthodontic palatal expansion device.

After using “MARPE” for 2 months,

the maxilla changed from a narrow shape like Δ to a wider U shape.

After obtaining space between the front teeth through arch expansion,

we proceeded with the steps to rearrange the teeth

and completed the orthodontic treatment.

What is a palatal expansion device?

It is a device that widens a narrow dental arch,

and is mainly used in the maxilla.

It can expand left and right based on the midline,

and by securing space through arch expansion,

it makes nonsurgical orthodontic treatment possible

and helps achieve skeletal harmony between the upper and lower jaws.

The patient had an open bite along with an underbite.

After orthodontic treatment at Upenn Bareun Dental Clinic, a Jamsil orthodontic clinic,

the underbite improved,

and the open bite, in which the upper and lower teeth did not touch, also improved,

resulting in a normal bite.

Unlike before, when the lower lip protruded and stood out,

after orthodontic treatment

the side profile line looks much more beautiful and refined.
