When Did Facial Fillers Start?
Filler Duration, Side Effects

Hello! We are JPIL Clinic, which pursues the most beautiful feeling😊
Today, we’re going to organize, in an easy and thorough way, the questions many people have about fillers—from the principles to the history and side effects!

When did fillers begin?
The history of fillers is older than you might think.
In Germany in the 1800s, the first filler procedure involved harvesting fat from the patient’s own body and transplanting it to the face.

However, fat grafting at the time was difficult to shape,
and once it spread, it was not easy to refine it into the desired form.
So the first full-fledged filler material to appear was paraffin.
But paraffin was later banned because it could form granulomas,
which are tumors that develop over time.

The next shocking material to appear was industrial silicone.
In the 1960s and 1970s, fillers were expensive,
so in some cases, industrial silicone was illegally injected.
Fortunately, safe fillers are now widely used,
and problems like this have disappeared!

The beginning of the full-fledged filler era
Collagen → Hyaluronic acid
First-generation filler – Collagen filler (1981)
This was the first filler made by extracting collagen
from cow or pig skin.
However, its duration was short
and there was a risk of allergic reactions.

The emergence of hyaluronic acid filler (1996)
This is the filler we use most often today.
Because hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the human body,
it is highly safe, and its duration has also improved.
In 2003, it received FDA approval in the United States
and has since become the most popular filler.

However, there are also things to be careful about with hyaluronic acid fillers.
Because it is a moisturizing substance, if there is excessive tearing or
swelling, it may appear even more puffy.
So rather than injecting too much,
it is more natural and more satisfying to inject a little less than needed!✨

Filler procedures: Areas you must be careful with!
The most important thing to be careful about during filler procedures
is the blood vessels.
If an artery (a vessel that supplies oxygen) becomes blocked,
skin necrosis or blindness can occur.

Between the glabella, tip of the nose, and nasolabial fold areas,
caution is essential!
These areas have only one artery, so if it becomes blocked,
a different blood vessel cannot supply oxygen in its place.
That is why, immediately after a filler procedure, medical staff must check
whether blood flow is going through properly.

If a blood vessel is blocked by filler,
it can be treated immediately with a filler-dissolving injection (hyaluronidase),
allowing recovery without major aftereffects.
If you are worried after the procedure,
it is better not to go home right away and instead stay at the clinic for about 10 to 15 more minutes
so your condition can be checked.

What kind of clinic should you choose for filler procedures?
Anyone can face the risk of an accident with fillers.
What matters more is not choosing a clinic that simply says it has never had an accident,
but one with experienced and skilled medical staff who can respond quickly and accurately
if a dangerous situation arises.
That is much safer!✨
