Hello~
This is Director Lee Juri from Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
When I explain retainers after orthodontic treatment is completely finished,
I often get asked, “Do I really have to do this?”
Yes!!! They are essential.
Godeok-dong orthodontic retainers are essential to prevent relapse of malocclusion!
It is not an optionㅠㅠ
Today’s topic is the mystery of the human body:
Why do teeth move back again?

I was looking at the blog traffic,
and I can even feel how upset the patient was here~ ㅠㅠ
Why do they keep coming off and making things hard for patients...

I wrote about this in a previous post as well,
but to prevent tooth relapse, retainers are not optional—they are essential!

After finishing orthodontic treatment in Godeok-dong,
when patients look at their straightened teeth in the mirror,
one of the questions they ask most often is this:
“Now that orthodontics is over, I don’t have to worry anymore, right?”
Noㅠ
The important part starts from the moment orthodontics ends!!
Sadly... teeth still have the tendency to move,
that is, to relapse!!
So the saddest thing for a dentist is
finishing orthodontic treatment beautifully,
and then when the patient returns after a long time, their teeth have opened up...
or shifted...
Those cases are the saddestㅠㅠ
The wire needs to be attached to both the upper and lower teeth!!

If the teeth cannot maintain their corrected state stably,
they may return to their pre-treatment position or develop minor changes.
That is why we use retainers and bonded wires, and even use two types of retainers.
And that is also why, even if the wire bonded to the inside comes off, it needs to be reattached again and again!!
Why are retainers essential?
After orthodontic treatment, teeth need time to stabilize in their new position.
When we first make the retainer, we explain that for the first year, you should wear it as much as possible...
24 hours a day.
(I know this is difficult...)
In practical terms, it means wearing it except when eating.
A removable retainer is also essential, not just the bonded type!!
During orthodontic treatment, the bone and gum tissues surrounding the teeth adapt to the new position,
but this process does not happen instantly.
As time passes, the tissues around the teeth stabilize,
but until then, forces that try to move the teeth back to their original position are still at work.
In particular, the first few months after orthodontic treatment are the period with the highest risk of relapse,
so wearing a retainer is not optional—it is essential.
Even if you do not wear the retainer for just a few days,
when you try to put it on after a while, the teeth may have moved in the meantime,
so it may not fit well and can feel very tight.
That is because the teeth have moved~

Retainers help suppress this tooth movement
and allow the teeth to maintain a stable position.
In a way, the wire ties the teeth down so they can’t move~
Tight~
At first, everyone wears their retainer diligently.
But after 1 year or 2 years have passed since orthodontic treatment ended,
people tend to neglect it~
Once they start not wearing it even once,
from that point on, they really stop wearing itㅠㅠ
The aligned teeth that were achieved with time and money
slowly return to their previous state,
and the more severe the malocclusion is,
the faster it relapses!!
In the worst case, a second round of orthodontic treatment
may become necessary, which would be an unfortunate situation.

Wearing a retainer consistently is the answer!!
Consistency is truly the right answer
both in orthodontics
and in daily habits!!
If you want to keep your beautiful smile for a long time,
please wear your retainer consistently according to your doctor’s instructions! 😊
