Hello~
I’m Lee Ju-ri, Chief Director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
These days, many people prefer clear aligners instead of traditional orthodontic treatment.
But I’ve noticed that a lot of people have a fantasy about clear aligners~~
The bigger the expectation, the bigger the disappointment.
With incorrect information or misconceptions, many people often find themselves struggling between expectations and reality.
So today, I’d like to clear up some misconceptions properly!
In the end, clear aligners also move teeth, so they are no different from traditional orthodontic treatment.
Invisalign clear aligners: a common misconception — they’re convenient, but they still move teeth
I’ve organized this into 5 perspectives!!!

- Can Invisalign clear aligners solve all dental problems?
Clear aligner types: Invisalign and See-through Tech...: Naver Blog
I previously wrote a post comparing two types of clear aligner appliances.
At that time, I mentioned that Invisalign, with its long history, can also handle difficult and complex cases.
However... there are, of course, limitations..!
It is not effective in every case.
It is very suitable for mild crowding, spacing between teeth,
and slight protrusion of the mouth,
but
for severe malocclusion requiring double-jaw surgery...
or when there are complex bite problems,
it may need to be combined with surgical treatment.
In some cases, traditional orthodontic methods may be more appropriate.
Also, because orthodontic treatment moves teeth,
there are limitations when the position of the jawbone itself needs to be changed.
This is especially true in cases of severe underbite or overbite!!

I receive many orthodontic consultation questions through my blog,
but whether clear aligners are appropriate requires a precise diagnosis..
Moving teeth means
you have to pay attention to the bite, align the teeth, and
it’s a very complex process.
Even for the same protruding mouth, the severity of symptoms can differ,
so a diagnosis is essential!!!

- Clear aligners don’t hurt at all?
Because many people have experienced traditional orthodontic treatment,
most already know that tightening wires can hurt
and can cause sores inside the mouth.
Since Invisalign clear aligners have a shorter history,
people often mistakenly think they have no wires visually,
are made of plastic, and therefore won’t hurt at all~
Of course, there may be no wounds caused by metal brackets,
but clear aligners also move the tooth roots,
so discomfort and pain can still occur.
The pain each person feels can vary,
and it usually happens when the appliance is changed~
Since there is pressure on the teeth...
pain is actually a good sign that the teeth are moving!
Humans are creatures of adaptation,
so most people get used to it within a few days.
Don’t worry that the pain will make you avoid orthodontic treatment!!
- Clear aligners are completely invisible?
Clear aligners look very natural to the naked eye.
However, they are not completely unnoticeable.
To maximize orthodontic effectiveness, mini-screws may be placed,
and attachments may be bonded to the teeth~~
Here’s an orthodontic tip
241018
"What are attachments???"
If you look at the photo, you can see something attached to the outer surface of the teeth, right~?
Think of them as being placed to help move the teeth more effectively.
Even if they are matched to the tooth color,,
they still stand out because they protrude a bit.
If you want absolutely no visible signs of orthodontic treatment, you would need lingual orthodontics...
- Once clear aligners are made, that’s it?
Another misconception about clear aligners is that people think once the appliance is made,
you use it all the way until the orthodontic treatment is finished.
People are often surprised when I tell them that the appliance needs to be changed every two weeks!!
I think this misconception happens because traditional orthodontic treatment involves attaching brackets to the teeth
and removing them only when the treatment is finished~
Teeth move at different speeds for each individual,
and they may not follow the planned movement path!
For reasons such as not wearing the appliance for long enough...
and various other reasons.
That’s why you need to visit the clinic from time to time
to check whether the teeth are moving properly.
The plan can also be revised,
and additional appliances can be made!!

- Do you only wear clear aligners while sleeping?
The wearing time of clear aligners directly affects treatment results.
Many patients misunderstand clear aligners as something you can wear only when needed,
but in reality, they must be worn for at least 20–22 hours a day to be effective.

I’ve explained before that if you don’t think you can wear them for long periods,
traditional bonded orthodontic treatment would be more suitable.
You should keep them in all the time...
except when eating or brushing your teeth.
Clear aligners can be an attractive option because of their convenience and aesthetics,
but the misconceptions mentioned above
and understanding the limitations of Invisalign clear aligners
can increase satisfaction, I believe.
It is an orthodontic method that improves on some limitations of treatment,
but the principle and foundation are still the same!!
