Hello^^
This is Ju-ri Lee, Chief Director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
When making an orthodontic diagnosis, there may be situations where a tooth must definitely be extracted.
I know that many patients would prefer to avoid extraction as much as possible, but...
To meet those needs,
there are cases where teeth must be extracted for the sake of the treatment results.
Are there any side effects of orthodontic treatment with premolar extraction?? Because it means pulling healthy teeth...
Because having to extract a healthy tooth feels burdensome,
and because you may wonder whether there will be any problems afterward,
I wrote this post.
Please focus and read for just 3 minutes!!

"Why do we have to extract teeth~?"

250203 Crooked teeth
If the jaw is small or there is not enough space,
teeth may overlap or protrude forward, creating protrusive lips.
Wisdom teeth may be extracted to create space,
but
when that is not feasible,
space may also be secured through orthodontic treatment with premolar extraction~
"Which teeth are extracted?"
If there is no cavity or gum disease,
but teeth are extracted for orthodontic purposes,
you may worry, "Will it be okay when I get older...?"
and "Are there any side effects of extraction orthodontics?"
Generally, the small molars,
premolars, are extracted.
Among the two premolars,
the fourth tooth is usually extracted,
but
depending on the orthodontic diagnosis,
the fifth tooth may also be extracted.

The front teeth are extracted for aesthetic reasons,
and the molars play a major role in chewing function,
so the premolars are extracted.
They are located right around the curved part,
making them effective for improving crowded teeth,
and
compared with other teeth,
they perform relatively fewer functions~~
If unavoidable
(for example, if there is severe decay... or inflammation in the tooth and it must be extracted),
other teeth may also be extracted.

"Are there any side effects of extraction orthodontics?"
I understand your concerns very well.
If teeth are forced into alignment without extraction,
instead, the following side effects can occur.
Even after orthodontic treatment, the teeth may still not be evenly aligned,
and the lips may not move in as much as desired.
This means that even after treatment is finished, you may not be satisfied...
Side effects after extraction are part of the normal orthodontic process.
The roots may become shorter..
or the teeth may return to their original position..
These side effects can occur even with orthodontic treatment without extracting teeth,
and
this is something that can be prevented simply by wearing the retainer properly after treatment.

If premolar extraction orthodontics is truly necessary, please do not worry!
While undergoing orthodontic treatment, we also adjust the bite,
and because we complete treatment as though the teeth were originally not there,
you should not feel uncomfortable!!
It would be nice to be able to correct teeth without extraction,
(because patients’ feelings and ours are not that different...)
but
there are many cases where extraction is necessary to improve protrusive lips or resolve severe malocclusion.
The important thing is that we recommend extraction only when the benefits outweigh the drawbacks!!
Even if you have been told extraction is needed, please do not be too upset~
We are telling you this because we judged it was truly necessary.
Thank you!!!
