Hello~
I’m Lee Juri, the chief director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic!
When parents visit for a child’s oral examination and I tell them that treatment seems necessary because there is a cavity,
many mothers ask, “It’s a tooth that will be lost soon—does it still need treatment?”
This is a very common question ㅎㅎ
Baby teeth play an important role until the permanent teeth come in!!
Sangil-dong Pediatric Dental Clinic: Why Baby Teeth Need Treatment Even Though They Will Be Lost Soon
Today’s post is about the importance of baby teeth~!
Why do baby teeth need
to be treated?
First, they affect the alignment of permanent teeth.
As the roots of baby teeth dissolve, the permanent teeth come up~
They help maintain the space where the permanent teeth will settle!
For that reason, if a baby tooth falls out too early due to a cavity or other reasons,
adjacent teeth may move into the empty space,
which can make it difficult for the permanent tooth to come in at the correct position!
(This means it may come in crooked..)

So if a tooth falls out too early,
a device like this that helps maintain the space needs to be made!
Second, cavities are contagious.
If a cavity forms between teeth, the teeth on both sides can decay together~
If cavities are left untreated, they can later affect the permanent teeth that come in.
If a cavity gets worse, inflammation can develop at the root tip,
and a pimple-like bump may appear on the gum~

The problem is that the permanent tooth bud is located directly beneath the baby tooth.
That means the inflammation can spread to the permanent tooth and affect it!
If that happens, the permanent tooth may not be healthy even after it comes in.
240809 Because the inflammation was severe, we performed root canal treatment on the baby tooth and placed a silver crown~!
Treatment for baby teeth is decided according to when they are expected to fall out!
If it will be lost within a few months,
we do not provide aggressive treatment,
but depending on the case, canines or molars may need to be used until the upper grades of elementary school~
In such cases, after root canal treatment, a crown should be placed just like for adults~
It is called an ss crown, and it is a crown made specifically for children!
Because it is the color of a gold or silver tooth,
it shines brightly ㅎㅎ
Third, it plays an important role in speech development.
There are differences in the sounds you can make depending on whether teeth are present or not~
If baby teeth fall out early or are damaged,
children may have difficulty pronouncing certain sounds.
Summary of today’s post
If treatment is delayed, these problems can occur!
-
Problems with tooth alignment
: If baby teeth must be removed early, this can lead to alignment problems.
-
Worsening permanent tooth health
: If cavities become severe, they can negatively affect the health of the permanent teeth that come in later.
-
Impact on speech
These can be summarized into three points.

Recommended treatment methods for baby teeth at Sangil-dong Pediatric Dental Clinic
Children’s cavity treatment is not very different from adult treatment~
If the cavity is small, it is filled with insurance-covered materials or resin,
after which severe cavities may be treated with root canal therapy and then covered with a crown~
The important thing is that baby teeth are smaller,
and cavities progress faster than in adults.
(They are not as hard as adult teeth~)
Through regular checkups at least every 3 to 6 months,
we need to prevent cavities and resolve problems early.
It’s hard to bring them to the dentist...
and it’s hard to coax and comfort them too, right~ ?
Since the dental clinic makes sounds
and water comes out,
we know it can be a frightening place.
However, the longer treatment is delayed, the more anesthesia may be needed,
and the number of visits also increases,
so if you want children not to fear the dentist,
they should receive treatment early!
Fear formed in childhood often continues into adulthoodㅠㅠ
It’s just a tooth that will be lost soon..
Please don’t leave it untreated with that thought,
and be sure to treat it for the sake of healthy permanent teeth!!
At Sangil-dong Pediatric Dental Clinic, we take time with the child and provide treatment so they do not become afraid of the dentist!!!
