Hello~
This is Lee Juri from Seoul Vardi Dental Clinic!
When the extent of a cavity is extensive
or when treating cavities between teeth,
we perform an
"inlay" treatment.
However, not all inlay restorations are made of the same material~
There are also two types of tooth-colored materials!
Hybrid inlay is used when treating cavities between teeth.
Today, I’ll explain one of them!!
If you do not use dental floss, cavities can form between teeth,
and in such cases, inlay treatment is performed.
What is an inlay?

It is used when the cavity is not extensive enough to require completely covering the tooth,
but is too deep and too large in area for resin.
Also, when decay occurs on the side of the tooth,
we cannot access it from the cheek side with instruments,
so the cavity is removed starting from the chewing surface.
If you have seen a restoration with an L-shape
or a piece-like form, that is an inlay restoration!
Depending on the material used,
there are gold inlays, Emax inlays, resin inlays, and more.
Just as earrings can be made from various materials such as gold, silver, and bronze!
In particular, hybrid inlays are drawing attention these days!
What is a hybrid inlay?
A hybrid car is a vehicle that combines fuel and electricity, right~
A hybrid inlay is a restoration made by combining ceramic and resin (plastic) materials.
By supplementing the shortcomings of conventional gold inlays and ceramic inlays,
it is a treatment that maintains a color and strength similar to natural teeth
while reducing the cost burden.

Advantages of hybrid inlays
- Tooth-colored and aesthetically pleasing!!
Because the color is similar to that of teeth, patient satisfaction in terms of appearance is high.
Especially when treating lower teeth!
- A proper balance of strength and elasticity
The reason gold was used a lot in the past
was that tooth-colored materials had a risk of breaking~
Since hybrid inlays are made by combining two materials,
they have appropriate elasticity and strength,
while also reducing the burden on the teeth!
- Economical.
Compared to treatment with gold fillings,
the cost is lower!
- Wear similar to natural teeth
You might think that harder is always better,
but being too hard is not good either~
Because teeth come together on both sides,
the opposing tooth can wear down~
Hybrid inlays have a strength similar to natural teeth,
so this burden is reduced!

Disadvantages of hybrid inlays
- Possibility of discoloration
Because it contains resin, it is more likely to discolor than ceramic.
Like... when a transparent phone case changes color..
the area around the treated site may change color.

The color changed on 240813~
Even though the discoloration is often mistaken for decay,
if only the color has changed, it is fine to continue using it as is.
- Possibility of wear with long-term use
A limitation of restorations is that they have a lifespan.
There is no permanent restoration~!
If you often eat hard foods,
or over time, it may gradually wear down.

<One-line summary>
- For those who want aesthetics
- For those who need treatment in areas that are not subjected to excessive force
It can be a good treatment option.
I think it is best to see hybrid inlays as a treatment option
that combines aesthetics and cost-effectiveness.

There are many materials used in dentistry,
and they are used according to the situation.
