Hello~
This is Juri Lee from Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic!

Have you heard that wisdom teeth need to be removed during orthodontic treatment?
I’m trying to align my teeth nicely...
Why do I have to remove wisdom teeth..?
You may have wondered that~!
Should wisdom teeth be removed during orthodontic treatment??
Today, I’ll talk about the relationship between wisdom teeth and orthodontic treatment!
What are wisdom teeth..?
Wisdom teeth are the third molars that grow at the very back of the molars.
Sometimes people don’t have them at all,
and in many cases, they are buried inside the gum bone.

This patient from 230725 has a horizontal, impacted wisdom tooth~~
Generally, because they are at the very back, brushing is difficult,
and they can cause cavities in the teeth in front,
so they are often removed~

Do wisdom teeth absolutely have to be removed during orthodontic treatment?
Not always.
If you were told that the wisdom teeth need to be removed,
it was probably to secure space for orthodontic treatment~

A crooked tooth alignment like this often happens because it is difficult to secure enough space for the teeth.
Tooth extraction is the most certain way to secure space,
but these days, most people do not want extractions,
and there are also ways to secure space with non-extraction orthodontic treatment.
Reducing the spaces between teeth is one method, and so is removing wisdom teeth like today to secure space in the back!

Clear aligners are no exception~ This is explained by analyzing tooth movement!
When we analyze the orthodontic case,
if we can secure space by extracting the wisdom teeth,
that is why we recommend it.
Or, during orthodontic treatment, brushing can be difficult.
If the wisdom teeth are likely to cause secondary cavities or gum disease,
we recommend removal~

Can wisdom teeth be removed during orthodontic treatment?
I’m already wearing braces on my teeth,
can they still be removed~?
Many people ask this.
Yes, it is possible!
We do not attach appliances to wisdom teeth~
(Of course, if a tooth has been lost,
there are cases where the wisdom tooth is pulled forward and used like a regular tooth..
I’ll talk about this again later!)

We decide the timing after orthodontic analysis~!
The timing for wisdom tooth extraction may be before orthodontic treatment starts,
or it may be during treatment.
However, in most cases, soon after orthodontic treatment begins,
we can take steps so it does not interfere with tooth movement.
The answer depends on the patient’s condition,
so the doctor in charge of your orthodontic treatment
will tell you the timing!
Shall we summarize~?
It is not always necessary to remove wisdom teeth during orthodontic treatment!
After orthodontic diagnosis, extraction may be recommended.
