I’m Yoon Tae-ho, in charge of surgery at Seoul Vardi Dental Clinic.

When teeth are lost and dentures are worn for a long time, one of the things that happens is

that the height of the teeth decreases.

(This is because, with no teeth, the bone is resorbed~~)

Today’s patient also mustered the courage, despite her age, to switch from dentures to implants because of the discomfort caused by the lowered height.

I’ll show you the treatment process.

I keep biting my lip, and it’s uncomfortable.

This is an 80s female patient who visited Sangil-dong Dental Clinic.

At present, she was using a partial denture for her upper teeth, but said she could not eat.

Because she kept chewing on her lips, she got sores and it hurt,

and she also couldn’t eat comfortably~~

After examining her, there was not a large difference in height between the upper and lower teeth overall.

Only the front teeth remained as natural teeth, and a long time had passed since the molars were lost,

so the bite had collapsed.

She should have come in regularly for denture checks... It seems she hadn’t visited the dental clinic for a while..

Because the denture could not replace the space where the teeth used to be, it collapsed even faster

(and bone resorption also progressed rapidly...)

Since there was almost no difference in height between the upper and lower teeth.. rather than chewing food,

she ended up biting her lips.

This is the treatment plan from 241031~~ It is a plan to restore function while making use of the existing implants.

To solve the most uncomfortable problem of biting the lips, we needed to secure tooth height.

In the current situation, there was no space for the molar crowns to fit.

(The upper and lower teeth were almost touching.)

In addition to the collapsed tooth height, the second issue was that there was a big difference in the number of remaining teeth.

There were relatively more lower teeth, while the upper teeth had suffered more loss.

If we treated it again with a denture, the fit would still not be right.

Because the balance of force would be broken~

The relatively stronger implant-supported teeth would keep hitting the denture,

which would also cause problems for the denture. Teeth could break, or the patient could not eat comfortably...

She is elderly. Wouldn’t it be better to use dentures, doctor?

There were already 3 existing implants, and most of the lower teeth were also implants,

so we set up a treatment plan to switch from the partial denture to implants.

However, the patient and her guardian were concerned because of her advanced age,

and wondered whether surgery would be too much for her... They were worried.

I showed them through CT that implants can be done regardless of age as long as there is bone,

and explained that, considering the two problems the patient had,

and the compatibility between the upper and lower teeth, implants were the appropriate choice.

I also explained that the biggest discomfort, biting the lips, could be resolved by raising the height through treatment.

No matter how much I explain, if the patient does not gather the courage, treatment cannot begin.

She understood for herself why the plan was made with implants, and because she found the courage to undergo surgery, things went smoothly from there.

The surgery was done in one session using the navigation implant method.

During the impression-taking and prosthesis fabrication process, we finished by increasing the upper and lower height.

Because the upper and lower teeth had been touching normally before, when the height is increased,

the feeling of the bite can seem strange at first and feel awkward.

There may be some discomfort.

But people are creatures of adaptation, and once they get used to it quickly,

they can actually eat more comfortably on both sides ^^

During treatment, we made maximum use of the existing implants.

When people hear that the height has lowered, some think the existing implants must be removed~

Implants are placed inside the bone, and raising the height is handled through the prosthesis, so it is not a problem.

Here is the finished result.

It was completed with a normal bite, with the upper teeth covering the lower teeth.

The problem of biting the lips was naturally resolved~~

The area where the implants had been placed before became exposed as the gum bone resorbed,

but we decided to manage it and use it as much as possible...

After 6 months, I told her to eat well and come back having gained some weight.

Please just bring the courage to resolve your discomfort.
