Hello~
I’m Lee Juri, the chief dentist at Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic!
The midline doesn’t match...
Should I get orthodontic treatment again?
Near the end of orthodontic treatment,
I hear this kind of concern a lot!
“Uh...? It looks like my front teeth are slightly shifted to one side?”
Since orthodontic treatment takes a lot of time and money,
it’s only natural to expect a perfect result.
If you’re worried when your dental midline doesn’t match?
Today, I’ll explain the secret of the midline~
What is the dental midline..?
The dental midline refers to
whether the center of the two upper front teeth and the center of the two lower front teeth are aligned on the same line.

250215 The midline is aligned, but it is malocclusion.
In an ideal bite, it is best for this midline
to match the center of the nose,
but in reality, that is much less common.
It is rare for a person’s face to be perfectly symmetrical!
Maybe only a Venus statue could be.
Because the left and right lengths of the jaw,
the center of the cheekbones or nose,
the forehead line, the position of the corners of the mouth, and more all differ slightly,
a slightly off midline is a very natural phenomenon.

250328 When the midline does not match
A person’s face may be asymmetrical,
or a tooth may be missing,
For various reasons, the midline may end up being off by about 1–2 mm
when treatment is completed.
You cannot simply conclude that orthodontic treatment was done incorrectly just because the midline is off.

The reason for wearing elastics near the end of orthodontic treatment is to align the midline!
Near the end of orthodontic treatment,
we do try to align the midline,
but there are definitely cases that orthodontics cannot solve!!
Why might the midline not match even after orthodontic treatment?
Asymmetry of the jawbone
Even if the upper and lower teeth are perfectly aligned,
if the jawbone itself is asymmetrical, the midline may appear slightly off.
Because the bone itself is twisted,
there is a limit to what orthodontics alone can do.
Orthodontic treatment moves the teeth.

Missing number of teeth
Some people are born with a different number of teeth on each side.
If the space is awkward for an implant, for example,
the midline may not match~
Functional priority
Orthodontic treatment is not just about “arranging the teeth nicely,”
but the most important thing is to create a bite that allows you to chew healthily.
If you try too hard to match the midline and end up putting stress on the temporomandibular joint,
or if the molar bite becomes misaligned, the functional downside may be greater.
So in some cases, a compromise is made within a certain range for the midline.
(In such cases, we explain it in advance!)

250214 What matters more than the midline is the bite!
In fact, most people do not notice a subtle deviation in the midline
when they smile or talk,
and unless you are concerned about it yourself, people around you will not notice at all.
(Unless it is really severely off!)
But...
If the midline keeps getting more and more off,
and if treatment is still in progress,
a re-evaluation may be necessary.
It may also be worth checking the temporomandibular joint!!
If your dental midline doesn’t match,
it does not mean the orthodontic treatment was wrong!!

Chewing function is more important!!
A successful orthodontic treatment is judged by evaluating
dental alignment, bite, temporomandibular joint, midline, and more.
(I’ll prepare a post about this later!)
To summarize,,,,
Even if the midline is not perfectly aligned after orthodontic treatment,
that does not mean the treatment failed.
What matters more than what you can see is
how well the teeth and jaw are harmoniously balanced in a healthy way.
Please remember!!!!
