Self-ligating brackets: finish faster and reduce pain
Orthodontic treatment = railroad tracks
Those days are over!
Hello,
I’m Lee Juri, the chief director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
When people think of orthodontic treatment, many still picture silver-colored braces.
That shiny silver look when you smile,
a heavy, bulky image,
and the burden of braces that stand out.
So these days, many patients ask first whether clear aligners are possible for aesthetic reasons.
However, clear aligners are not possible for everyone.
In cases of severe malocclusion, clear aligners alone have limitations.
So is there really no solution?
This is where white-colored brackets come in.
Today, to help ease all of those concerns,
I’d like to talk about self-ligating brackets.
I hope this helps patients make their choice.

White self-ligating brackets,
what is Clippy-C?
When we think of orthodontic appliances, isn’t metal still the first thing that comes to mind?
In the past, brackets were attached to the teeth,
and thin wires were tied to the brackets to move the teeth.
The wire wrapped around the brackets in a fish-like shape to transmit force.
It has clearly been effective enough to be used until now,
but it can cause pain while applying force to the teeth,
and the ends of the wire can poke the lips or cheeks and even cause sores.
The method developed to address these drawbacks is the self-ligating system.
As the name suggests, it is a structure in which the bracket self-ligates.
There is no need to tie the wire to the bracket separately.

The silver-colored part is the lid.
Because the bracket itself has a cover,
all you need to do when securing the wire is open and close the lid.
It can be fixed simply,
just like opening and closing a door.
There are representative self-ligating bracket brands such as Damon and Clippy-C.
They are also among the most commonly used brands.
Just as Osstem and Megagen are well-known names in implants.
250509 If you remove the fixed wire, you can clearly see the lid that opens and closes the bracket, right??
Each appliance has its own pros and cons,
but compared with conventional silver-colored appliances,
it incorporates more aesthetic considerations
and is similar in color to the teeth.
Because the bracket itself holds the wire,
the treatment period is shortened.
As friction is reduced,
tooth movement is faster.
And because force is applied consistently and continuously,
there is less pain as well.
Many people want clear aligners because of aesthetics.

However, clear aligners sometimes also require attachments,
small bump-like devices.
These are important devices that help move teeth in specific directions
or make complex tooth movements possible.
When these devices are attached, they can create a protruding appearance,
so I think the feeling of protrusion may be similar to when wearing wire braces.

Also, clear aligners are useless if you do not wear them.
In contrast, self-ligating brackets are attached to your teeth anyway,
so force is applied 24 hours a day,
and in terms of treatment time,
they may actually finish faster than clear aligners.
If you value both aesthetics and orthodontic effectiveness,
self-ligating brackets,
especially those made of ceramic, can be an excellent alternative.
Orthodontics is not a short-term project;
it is a long-term treatment that stays with you for 2 to 3 years.
Before starting orthodontic treatment, it is essential
to receive a thorough explanation of the appliance.
If traditional metal braces feel burdensome,
now white braces that are less noticeable are a good alternative.
Self-ligating brackets: finish faster and reduce pain
I hope today’s post was helpful for those considering orthodontic treatment,
and I’ll wrap up here.
Thank you.
