Hello,
I’m Lee Juri, the head dentist at Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
Now that you’re starting to understand the joy of chewing with an implant...
Many people suddenly worry when an unusual smell comes from their mouth.
"Uh... Did something go wrong with the surgery...?"
"Do I need to take it out...?"
In particular, Koreans are sensitive to bad breath, so it can affect relationships, work life, and even dating, which naturally makes people worry.
So why does a smell come from around an implant?
Management methods
Improvement methods
I’ll explain them step by step.

What is the cause of implant odor?
First, since there are many possible causes of odor,
we need to check whether it is a problem with the implant itself or bad breath coming from the gums.
Odors caused by tartar or gum disease usually improve with scaling alone.
That’s because they are treated as the inflammation is removed.
But if the implant is the cause, it may be due to this.
Usually, there is no smell right after surgery.
After several months or several years,
it becomes a problem once the prosthesis has been made and has been used for a while.

An implant consists of an artificial root fixed in the bone
and a prosthesis (crown) connected on top of it.
At this time, there is a very narrow microscopic gap between the gum around the crown and the tooth.
If food debris or bacteria build up there,
bacteria can multiply just as much as they do around natural teeth, and a smell can develop.
250308 Bacteria can enter the boundary area of the prosthesis
In the end, the smell is mostly not because the implant itself is broken,
but because the surrounding environment has not been properly managed.
In particular, when the boundary of the implant prosthesis is not accurate,
food can get in more easily,
so the smell can become worse.

I had no idea food was stuck there...
Some people think like this.
When food gets stuck between teeth,
patients usually feel discomfort right away,
but many people do not notice tiny debris getting in.

You may notice only when the implant hole comes loose
and food gets in, causing a smell...
(If the area around the hole feels rough, you should visit the clinic right away!)
Sometimes the prosthesis has to be removed and cleaned because of persistent bad odor.
Usually, people realize it after the prosthesis is removed
and the inside is disinfected.
If you notice an implant odor,
cleaning is needed!
It would be good if it ended with just a smell,
but since there is also a risk of implant failure,
you need to visit the clinic.
Since it is an artificial tooth,
it needs to be kept even cleaner than a natural tooth.
Natural teeth are held in place by bone and the periodontal ligament,
but implants are fixed directly into the bone,
so once inflammation develops,
the surrounding gum bone can melt away.

Continuous bone loss can prevent the implant from being held firmly,
causing it to become loose,
and it may need to be removed.
Therefore, along with careful toothbrushing,
using interdental brushes and dental floss is one way to make implants last longer.
You should also visit the clinic where the procedure was done regularly,
and scaling and checkups are essential.
In particular, if you think, “It’s an implant, so it must be stronger~” and neglect cleaning,
you’ll end up on the path to gradual damage along with bad odor and peri-implantitis.
Gum cleaning, such as scaling,
is more than just a solution to odor problems;
it is like insurance that protects the lifespan of the implant.
Lastly... if you notice these symptoms, visit the clinic!
Even if it is not your scheduled appointment date,
if symptoms appear in the implant, you should visit right away.
240830 Debris stuck around the implant prosthesis and the gums looking red and swollen
- Swelling of the gums, bleeding, or pus is visible along with a smell
- The implant area hurts when chewing or feels loose
- The bad odor persists even with diligent cleaning
These may be symptoms of peri-implantitis.
If discovered early, it can be managed well.
But if left untreated, the bone can also dissolve, requiring surgical retreatment,
or in the worst case, removal of the implant.
Today, I explained why an implant at Godeok-dong Dental Clinic can smell bad.
Just because there is a smell from an implant,
there is no need to immediately conclude that something has gone wrong.
In most cases, it is a problem that can be resolved through cleaning and proper care.
If you are worried,
from today, check your implant care habits
and if your implant is old, please get a checkup.
Since it is an artificial tooth, it can be difficult to care for...
but because it is a tooth that I have to live with for the rest of my life,
I should take good care of it, right??
I hope today’s post was helpful to those who are worried about implant odor,
and I’ll end here.
Thank you!
