Hello,
I’m Lee Juri, the chief director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
Last time,
I talked about the connection between a recessed chin and snoring.

Today, I’ll cover another sleep-related issue:
teeth grinding.
It not only has a negative effect on dental health,
but can also leave the jaw feeling stiff and even affect temporomandibular joint disorders.
In this post,
we’ll look step by step at symptoms and causes through an actual patient case,
and also at the effects of a teeth-grinding prevention device, the splint, that helps relieve it.

If an adult has teeth grinding, the oral condition looks like this.
Many people do not realize they grind their teeth.
Even if you live with family,
if you sleep separately,
or if teeth grinding happens only intermittently,
many people may not notice it.
A female patient in her early 20s who visited us recently also came to Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic not because of teeth grinding,
but because of a dental problem.
Representative symptoms caused by teeth grinding
My jaw feels stiff every morning,
and the entire upper row of teeth hurts.
At first, we examined whether there was a problem with the temporomandibular joint.
The oral condition was typical of teeth grinding.
A worn side surface of the tooth
Her teeth were also significantly worn compared to others her age,
and excessive force had caused the sides of the teeth to become worn down,
along with the white line on the cheek side,
the imprint on the tongue.
Since she said her jaw felt stiff as well,
we could suspect teeth grinding.
Traces of worn teeth
The patient said she had not noticed it at all.
When you wake up in the morning and your jaw feels stiff and heavy,
or the length of your teeth is gradually getting shorter,
or the tooth surfaces are worn down,
or there is a white line on the cheek,
or there are marks where the tongue has been pressed by the teeth, you should suspect teeth grinding.
Because it happens while you are sleeping,
you may wonder, “Could I be doing that too...?”
It is a good idea to ask family members to check,
or, if you live alone,
record what happens during sleep and review it.
There is no specific cause that can be clearly identified for adult teeth grinding,
but it is also a problem commonly found in adults in their 20s and 30s who have a lot of work or academic stress.

- What are the effects of a teeth-grinding prevention device?
When teeth grinding symptoms are present,
one way to address them is to make a teeth-grinding prevention device.
It is commonly called a splint.
250724
It is a transparent custom-made appliance
that is worn over the teeth during sleep.
Many patients ask, “If I use the appliance, will the teeth grinding itself stop?”
To be honest,
a teeth-grinding appliance (splint) is not a treatment that completely eliminates the teeth-grinding habit.
At this point, there is no treatment that can eliminate teeth grinding 100%.
But that does not mean it is meaningless.
On the contrary, it is one of the most effective ways to protect the teeth and temporomandibular joint and minimize the damage left by teeth grinding.

If you have no choice but to grind your teeth,
grin d them in a better direction.
This is the core role of the teeth-grinding prevention device,
the splint.
It prevents the teeth from directly colliding,
and the appliance absorbs the pressure that occurs when grinding,
so the teeth are no longer worn down.
When you wear the appliance, it helps reduce excessive contraction of the jaw muscles,
which decreases the stiffness or headache you feel in the morning.
Most of all, it has the best effect of extending the life of your teeth.
Once teeth are worn down, it cannot be reversed,
and the splint for teeth grinding is like putting protective gear on the teeth.
If you also feel that your jaw is stiff every morning,
or have experienced sensitive teeth,
please do not worry alone and get a professional diagnosis.
Even while you are asleep and unaware,
your teeth and jaw may still be suffering.
These days, there is also a treatment in which Botox is injected into the jaw muscles,
which can help reduce teeth grinding by relaxing the muscles.

After diagnosis, we will suggest the appropriate treatment method.
You have all heard the saying that sleep is the best medicine, right?
One of the ways that can greatly improve quality of life
is treating problems that occur during sleep.
A teeth-grinding prevention splint
is a small device,
and when you experience it firsthand,
you will understand that a small device can protect your teeth and jaw.
I will continue to share good information with patients.
Thank you for reading this long post.
