Hello,
I’m Lee Juri, head director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
At some point,
it seems that the act of implant surgery started being described as “driving in the fixture.”
I think “fixture” may mean the core or main part.
It also seems to have come from the expression “implanting an implant.”
Today, along with the structure of an implant,
we’ll look at the process of driving in the fixture.
This is an article that may be helpful
for people having surgery for the first time.

- The three stages of implant structure
An implant actually refers to the very small screw
part.
Patients often think the part they chew with
is the implant,
but
that part is the prosthetic.

When we perform implant surgery
and
until we place the prosthetic,
we go through all three structural stages.
On the day of surgery,
we place the root part of the implant into the jawbone.
What we mean by “fixture” here is the part that goes into the jawbone.

Among these, “driving in the fixture” refers to the first stage of the process,
meaning laying the foundation inside the bone.
Once the implant has sufficiently fused with the bone,
we move on to the next step.
- Drive it in and do nothing?..
Some people think this way.
They thought they could chew right after the surgery...
Why do they keep telling me to come back later??
You may feel that way.

As I wrote recently...
You cannot chew on the same day immediately after an implant is placed.
It’s not that nothing is being done;
it’s that we are waiting for the most optimal timing.
A device that checks implant osseointegration
After the implant is placed,
the screw needs time to firmly bond with the jawbone.
If this process does not go properly,
it may become loose as soon as you chew,
or the tooth may be pulled out again.
201104 Over time, implant bone can also resorb, just like periodontal disease in people.
It may seem better to make the tooth right away,
but our chewing force is tremendous.
According to research, adult men exert about 50 kg,
and adult women about 30 kg.
If you think about your own body weight,
you can imagine how much force is being applied.
It is almost equal to the weight of one elementary school student.

Because of this, if it does not firmly attach to your bone,
problems can easily occur.
So waiting long enough and safely achieving osseointegration with the bone
before placing the prosthetic is much more stable in the long term.

Driving in the implant fixture is
not simply the act of inserting a screw,
but a process of laying the foundation for at least the next ten years of use.
You all know the story of the Three Little Pigs, right?
The first pig built a straw house,
the second pig built a wooden house,
and the third pig built a brick house.
On the surface, it may seem better if a house is completed quickly,
but when the wolf appeared, the straw house and
the wooden house collapsed in an instant.
However, the third pig, who took time and effort to
build a sturdy brick house, was able to stay safe.
Just as a house lasts a long time only when its foundation is strong,
a dental implant also needs the fixture to be firmly attached to the bone
in order to be used for a long time without problems.
Therefore, after placing the fixture,
it may be frustrating if there is no visible change right away,
but you should remember that this is actually the most important process
for implant success.
Today, too, at Sangil-dong Dental Clinic,
we are writing informational posts so that patients can understand them.
I hope this was helpful.
Thank you.
