Hello.
I’m the director of Seoul Vardi Dental Clinic.
Implants can’t decay,
so do I really need to go for regular checkups?
Our Seoul Vardi Dental Clinic always tells patients to come in on the next scheduled checkup date
once the implant treatment is completed.
But most patients neglect regular checkups because they aren’t in pain.
I completely understand that your body and mind can be exhausted after undergoing treatment for a long time.
However, just as important as the surgery itself,
you should not overlook the fact that regular checkups are essential.
Today, I’ll share the story of a patient who delayed an implant regular checkup because it felt bothersome and ended up suffering a bigger loss.

Why are implant regular checkups important?

Since implants are made of metal,
there is no doubt that they cannot get cavities.
Then why do we keep telling patients to come in for regular checkups?
The answer lies in the structure of the implant.
An implant is directly placed into the bone and does not move,
but natural teeth have a "periodontal ligament" that connects the tooth and the bone.

Because of this periodontal ligament, natural teeth have a slight amount of movement,
unlike implants.
Over time,
implants remain fixed in the bone and do not move,
but natural teeth gradually shift forward.
As a result, tiny spaces can form between the implant and the natural tooth,
and food can get trapped there.
This can lead to cavities or gum disease.
This is why we ask patients to come in for regular checkups.

Godeok-dong Dental Clinic 230926 Treatment of 2 lower left molars
This is a female patient in her 60s who received lower left molar implants at our clinic.
After the implant treatment was completed,
she did not come in on the scheduled checkup date,
and we had to contact her repeatedly before finally being able to see her.
Just as we were about to check via X-ray whether there were any problems with the implant,
230926 Cavities between teeth
we discovered that a small cavity was developing in the gap between the implant and the adjacent natural tooth.
Because the cavity was not severe,
I felt it would be a shame to treat it right away,
so I remember telling the patient to take good care of it with an interdental brush
and to 꼭 come in on the next regular checkup date.
However,
after that, there was no word at all..
She missed the next scheduled checkup date,
and although we contacted her several times,
she kept postponing because she was busy...
Then about a year and a half passed,
and at last we were able to see the patient again after a long time.
The tooth next to the implant
is getting more and more sensitive and uncomfortable.
Food seems to get stuck too..
250321
A year and a half was apparently quite a long time,
because the cavity had already grown significantly.
The patient also said that
because it didn’t hurt, she thought it was fine and did not come in on the regular checkup date.

This is the X-ray image from a year and a half ago and the one taken afterward.
The difference in cavity size is quite large, isn’t it?
Because the cavity had already invaded the nerve,
we had no choice but to decide on root canal treatment.
250321~250421
After measuring the length of the root nerve to the very end and disinfecting it through 2 to 3 rounds, the root canal treatment was completed.
250717 Finished with a crown after root canal treatment
After the root canal treatment, a crown was placed to prevent the weakened tooth from breaking, and the treatment was completed.
Just as "an early-detected cancer is caught quickly,"
regular checkups are the best way to find small problems in advance,
not when they "hurt," but before they appear,
so they can be resolved with less effort, time, and cost.
Please don’t put it off any longer and come in comfortably.
Before small problems become big ones,
we’ll help you solve them together.
Thank you.
