“Can’t you make it look pretty without shaving the teeth?”
“I'm here for no-prep laminate!”
Hello, I’m the director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
These days, you probably see a lot of SNS ads about no-prep laminate.
The idea that you can create beautiful teeth without shaving them at all
is so appealing that even I find it tempting.
But the reality hidden behind the flashy marketing
is much more complicated than it seems.
Today, to help you avoid failure with no-prep laminate,
I’ll honestly explain the 3 things you must check before treatment.

- No-prep laminate is
not a treatment that can be done for everyone.

The cases in which no-prep laminate can be done are
far more limited than you might think.
In reality, no-prep is difficult for most patients,
and it is only possible under certain tooth conditions.
Typical cases include the following:
-
When the teeth are naturally small (microdontia)
-
When there is a large gap between the front teeth
-
When the teeth are especially thin
-
When the teeth are positioned inward

In the case of microdontia

When there is a wide space between teeth
In summary,
if the teeth are small or there is room between the front teeth, it may not be necessary to shave much of the tooth.
With just a slight surface refinement,
the size and shape of the teeth can be filled in naturally.

However, how far no-prep or minimal-prep treatment is possible
should be judged together with the overall bite condition
and how crooked the teeth are.
On the other hand,
if the teeth are large, protruded, and crooked,
there are limits to attaching laminate with no-prep only.
- No-prep is not always the better choice

With the increase in no-prep laminate ads,
many people have come to think that
“shaving teeth is always bad,”
which often leads them to insist on no-prep only.
But that is a misconception.
Proper tooth reduction can actually improve laminate bonding
and help create a better shape.

It is similar to smoothing out a wall surface
before applying wallpaper.
If you simply put wallpaper on a bumpy wall,
the raised parts will stand out even more, right?
Teeth are the same.
A process of lightly trimming protruding areas and treating the surface may be necessary.
In most cases, instead of shaving the entire tooth,
selective reduction of only the necessary areas
with a minimal-prep approach is recommended.

- Improper no-prep treatment can actually make the mouth look protruded.

The biggest problem with no-prep laminate is that it can produce unwanted results.
Even if laminate is made very thin,
it still has a thickness of about 0.1 to 0.5 mm.

What happens if that thickness is added as-is
onto teeth that are already somewhat forward?
The teeth will look even more protruded.
As a result, the teeth may look generally more forward,
and you may end up with the unwanted result of a protruded mouth appearance.
Moreover, if you are unhappy with it,
it is not easy to simply peel the laminate off.
Because the boundary between the laminate and the tooth is not clearly defined,
if removal is done carelessly,
there is a risk that the tooth surface will be damaged as well.
Laminate is not a cheap treatment,
and once done, it affects your teeth and smile for more than 10 years.
But after going through it,
if it does not look as good as you expected,
or if it keeps coming off after repeated attachment and removal, causing stress,
that is also truly difficult from the patient’s perspective.

Even a quick internet search shows many posts worrying about laminate coming off.
That is why we never just say, “Yes, no-prep is possible.”
First, after checking the patient’s tooth shape, alignment, and bite relationship
(the way the upper and lower teeth fit together),
we honestly explain whether the teeth are truly suitable for no-prep,
whether minimal-prep or orthodontic treatment first would be safer,
and whether the laminate can withstand long-term use.
Rather than focusing on advertising phrases,
we recommend listening to several dental opinions
and choosing a place that realistically explains your tooth condition.
If you are considering laminate,
please feel free to come in for a consultation.
Thank you.
